“I might’ve received such intel,” said Vedoma as she crossed her arms. “And now you want to beg for my help?”

“I was thinking more of a negotiation,” said Gabriel. “But begging is not excluded from the list of possibilities.” He kept a light mood to the conversation, probably to dissuade her from attacking first.

“I don’t negotiate with traitors. Seize them,” Vedoma commanded.

“We act as discussed,” Gabriel ordered. Kira and Troy split from Gabriel. Smaranda and another male vampire lunged toward Kira and Troy like savage beasts while the mage sent a spell toward Gabriel. The witch knew exactly what she was doing. The only way they could control Gabriel’s powers was with magic. And magic they used. The mage clearly wasn’t as strong as Vedoma, but for a good minute, he disarmed Gabriel. In the meantime, Kira and Troy fought an intense battle with the other two vampires. These beings not only possessed strength beyond one’s imagination, but they were also highly trained fighters. I, for sure, didn’t want to stand in their way. High kicks, heavy punches, throws over the shoulders, twists of all sorts, all were aimed at one thing, either to rip a heart or a head. Each of them was powerful, determined, and ruthless. The frustrating part was all of them were just as strong, and, in the end, no one could overturn the fight. Gabriel, on the other hand, while going through an intense mental struggle, clawed himself to the mage, pulled him under his body, and shredded him to pieces. All the while, he drank all his blood, not leaving a drop.

Gabriel went supersonic toward Vedoma, but one extended arm and a spell mumbled under her nose completely overpowered him. Centuries of mental and physical torture had played their vicious role perfectly. Gabriel didn’t stand a chance. He simply gripped his head in kneeled at the immeasurable pain the witch elicited. I had to help somehow.

From the side, Troy offed the male vampire. But Kira struggled to defeat Smaranda, especially given she was one of the oldest vampires. Smaranda pressed her forearm into Kira’s neck while my friend tried her best to push it back. Two hotbeds stood in front of me. Even though two of the opponents were defeated, I knew I only had one shot. Luckily, Troy moved behind Vedoma, wrapped around her, and began choking her. Great time for an intervention. I ran down the stairs straight into the mess. As I threw myself at Smaranda, she got startled. A good initial impression, I might add. “Look, King Gabriel, your measly human has decided to show off her kitten claws,” said Smaranda, snickering.

Didn’t she know kittens had the sharpest claws and could make a bloody mess out of anyone? It was clear Smaranda didn’t spend enough time with the cats at the Wallachian castle. Still, I decided to let her rude comment slide and focus on Smaranda’s curly hair. It direly needed a Petra updo. Smaranda wailed and then threw me like a ragdoll to the side. For a second, I lost consciousness.

The next time I opened my eyes, Vedoma vanished, Gabriel held Smaranda by the neck as her feet dangled, and Kira’s bloodied body lay lifeless on the ground.

“You die the same way you have killed,” said Gabriel as he thrust his hand into Smaranda’s chest and removed her heart.

Smaranda killed Kira. No, no, no. That could not happen. Tears flooded my eyes. I would’ve moved, but my body lost all its power, so I let the droplets flow down my cheeks, washing some of Kira’s blood Smaranda smeared on my face when she threw me. I could only see Troy’s outline leaning above Kira and feeling the same way as I did. Utter loss. For how long was this woman going to kill the people I cared for?

Gabriel approached me and lifted me into his arms. “Can you move your arms or legs?” he asked, not mentioning my rash decision to join the fight.

I shook my head.

“I’ll call a doctor. Maybe he can help.” Gabriel climbed the stairs slowly.

“Kira is dead.” I leaned on his chest.

“I know, my love.”

“We need to tell her sister.”

“We will. For now, you need to rest, and I’ll take care of everything else,” Gabriel said.

“I hate that woman to the core.” I whimpered.

Gabriel remained silent. He laid me in bed and covered me with the duvet.

“Promise me we will defeat her, Gabriel.” I clutched his arm.

He stayed silent.

“Promise me.” I began tearing up.

“I believe a doctor will be not enough,” he said and bit his wrist. “I’ve never shared my blood with anyone so often. I’m not sure of its effects. But I see you need it. Therefore I have no choice.”

“I don’t need your blood, Gabriel. I need to kill her. She must be defeated. It is not over…”

He placed his wrist to my mouth, and I didn’t have a choice but to taste it. Suddenly, everything became so light and easy. The heavy problems had been lifted, and I felt at peace. Darned be the vampire venom.

Chapter 13

Iwoke up with Gabriel next to me. He slept soundly as if yesterday’s events didn’t happen. In a way, I was grateful for him to have healed me, but also, I felt he tried to shut me. Probably to avoid the inevitable conversation about how we were to destroy the witch. The decision was made. She had to die. There was no other option. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself after she killed so many of my dear friends. “If I could just strangle her.” I grabbed a pillow and began crushing it.

“Are you trying to reenact a Shakespeare play? Is it Othello killing Desdemona?” asked Gabriel with a playful smile. “Should I fear for my life?”

“Says the immortal,” I retorted. “No, I was imagining how I would finish off Vedoma.”

Gabriel’s face suddenly changed. He got up and went straight to the bathroom. What was that all about? Didn’t Gabriel plan on ending this journey of suffering? I followed him. “Why did you leave the conversation?” I asked.
