“Did something happen to Gabriel?” Mei asked.

Athena felt our anguish, for she began crying just as loud.

Troy rose and took Athena in his arms. “You acted so for Athena, Milady. His Majesty will be forever grateful for the choice you made.”

“Did you hurt Gabriel?” Mei asked.

I nodded. “I killed him, Mei,” I whispered.

“But didn’t you say he cannot die unless he wishes?” Mei hugged me closer.

I nodded.

“If he let you hurt him and ultimately die, then he did it because there was no other choice.”

“He did it for us.” I wiped my tears.

“Didn’t you take the traveling stone from the witch? You can return back, can you?” Mei asked.

“I can. Yes, I can,” I said and stood up. “Where’s the stone, Troy? I need to go. I need to see him. Now!”

“I have it, Milady. But I cannot let you go in this state. We must decide at what time you should meet him again. His fate is sealed, no matter what, so you cannot travel earlier. If he doesn’t fulfill his destiny, he will die. He must become a vampire.”

“Then I will be there when he does. I will be there when the villagers shun him, when The Other Realm hunts him and throughout the rest of history. He will not do it alone. I will be there by his side for as long as his eternal life lets him. His destiny is not to die by my hand, right? After he becomes a supernatural being, his fate is free to change?”

Troy nodded while consoling Athena.

“I must go now. I cannot live another second without him,” I said and turned to the door. “Where is the stone, Troy?”

“Unfortunately, I cannot give you the stone until you settle things here, Milady. As much as I wish to fulfill your wish, you are not ready. You still have a kingdom to lead. A daughter to take care of. As painful as it is, the time to leave is not now.”

“If you’re not going to hand it to me, I’ll search for it myself.” I stormed out of the bedroom and straight to the study. I ransacked the entire room: the few books left flew off the bookshelves, documents from the drawers were scattered all over, and the few “precious” Petra exhibits got pushed to the ground.

After destroying everything I could get my hands on, I collapsed in the middle of the room and began weeping. I shed tears for him, for me, for us. For everything we fought and couldn’t have. The Happy Ever After had to be rebuilt from the ground once more. We will rebuild this castle, this library of first editions. We will have a museum dedicated to our love. Our portraits will have both of us in them. We will set a society where vampires and Other Realm beings live in peace and harmony. We will make sure of that. For this time, no one would dare cross Petra and Gabriel Stoica unless they wished for a swift death. We will be the strongest but also the fairest family to ever exist in human history. Though history might hold humanity’s cruelest moments, that would not change us. We will fight for every drop of happiness, every drop of life we can cherish together. If we are given the gift of eternal life, then we will make the most of it. Forever.

I heard voices becoming louder as they approached Gabriel’s study. “Do you think it was okay to let her go?”

“She needed this. After that, it will get better. She will get better… Milady, are you okay?” Troy asked and rushed to help me stand, though I resembled a puppet in his arms.

“I am. Where is Athena?”

“She went back to sleep,” Troy said.

“One and a half bottles of milk could do that to you,” Mei said. “Maybe you want to eat something too?”

“No. I want to rest. There’s much to do tomorrow,” I said as Troy helped me walk to my bedroom.

Mei glanced at Troy, worried about what I might do.

“Do not worry yourselves with my well-being. Few things can break me, though this one was a close one. But there is hope, and that is what I plan to leverage.” Troy let me sit on the bed. “But I’ll need to smother my thoughts to fall asleep. Do you have pills or liquor?”

“His Majesty had some in case you needed them,” said Troy as he went out of the bedroom.

When he returned, he had a whiskey bottle and three glasses.

“Are you planning to drink with us?” Mei asked.

“It doesn’t do much for me, but I would like to join you.” Troy poured some in each.
