“Now my question is, do you want to become a Time-Keeper?” Muma Padurii asked.

“Me?” I exclaimed. “How? Why? When?”

“Ah, so many questions, so little time to answer them,” said Mother of the Forest, snickering. “Time needs a keeper. You already have the stone.”

“But Vedoma sealed it to her life.”

“Indeed. She conjured an unbreakable spell. But I can switch the keepers. I can seal your life to the stone. Thus, not only will you become a Time-Keeper, but you will also gain knowledge of time-traveling spells.”

“I… I’m not sure. We need to talk about this with Gabriel.”

“Very well,” said the old lady, expecting such an answer.

“You forgot to tell us if you know about thevampyrspell,” I said.

She got up and turned to Solomonarul. “Let’s go, Simion. They have a lot to think about. And you need to tell me what happened to my forest.”

So much for an explanation. These supernatural beings loved to keep their knowledge cloaked in mystery. I hadn’t decided yet, but if I were to become a Time-Keeper, I wouldn’t mind taking Muma Padurii’s inflated ego for a spin in the time continuum.

Solomonarul bid his goodbyes apologetically and joined Muma Padurii on his horse. He helped her mount, and, on a trot, they rode toward the forest.

We returned to our bedroom and sat silently on the bed. Above us hovered heavy questions in need of answers. I couldn’t wait any longer and asked, “Do you think I should become a Time-Keeper?”

“Out of everyone I know, you would become the greatest Time-Keeper to ever exist,” said Gabriel.

“That seems a bit exaggerated,” I said.

“You hold all the qualities of a fair ruler,” he said.

“And so do you. If the fates still plan on conjuring a vampire, it might as well be you. Especially since I already know how it will all turn out. I could be your guide for your beastly form, and slowly we can bring your humanity back.”

“I never imagined myself turning into what seems like a more humanestrigoi.”

“A vampire is far more than astrigoi. You will hold infinite power and life. Imagine the good we could do if not for the sealed-fated humans, then for everyone else.”

“It will come at a price, the death of thousands of people.”

“We’ll make sure to choose those whose fate is sealed and who sinned enough to become astrigoi.”

“Are you suggesting a form of cleansing?”

“Only when absolutely necessary.”

“Does it mean you wish to become a Time-Keeper? But won’t you die of old age?” Gabriel asked.

“I can age only when I reach the present time, which for us will be a long time, though, in the present, it will be around half a year. Once we get there, I can always travel back to rejuvenate as Vedoma did. A summer vacation during various time periods doesn’t sound as bad. Plus, you wouldn’t even feel I’ve been gone as it would take but a few hours.”

“Then it’s settled, Milady the Time-Keeper?”

“Yes, my primordial vampire,” I said and kissed him with fervor.

“Wait, my love,” Gabriel said as he interrupted my passionate smooching. “What about the sacrifice?”

“You’re right. We have to free Athena from the sacrificial debt. But whom can we ask to grant us their life?”

“I do not know. It is the reason why I believe you should continue your journey on your own. To ask someone to sacrifice their life for me seems preposterous.”

“We could ask your family. Maybe it’s not their life the spell needs but their blood,” I said.
