“No, we never discussed it. You just assumed I was okay with it because I was sleeping with you.”

“Isn’t that how it works? We’re sleeping together. I’m not sleeping with anyone else, nor do I want to. Are you sleeping with someone else?” It was a thought I had never considered. I didn’t think she was, but after what she said, I wasn’t sure.

“Do you honestly think I would?” she asked and glared at me.

“No. But what you’re saying makes me rethink my impression of you.”

“What is your impression of me?”

“You’re the most amazing, incredible, resilient woman I’ve ever met. Not only are you beautiful on the outside, but you’re just as beautiful on the inside. Your kindness knows no bounds, and I feel lucky to have you in my life.”

“Thank you. Yet, you thought that I could sleep with multiple men and not tell you?”

“No. I didn’t think that. I never thought that, but why would you think you weren’t my girlfriend unless you were sleeping with someone else?”

“We were never serious, or we never were supposed to be. I told you when I started this that I wasn’t looking for anything long-term. I can’t give that to you; I don’t want to,” she said.

She had said that, but I had thought I could convince her to change her mind. I thought if I could show her what we could have, she would see things differently, but looking at her, I could see I had figured everything all wrong.

“We don’t have to end what we are when your internship is done. One has nothing to do with the other.”

“It has everything to do with it. The internship is why I’m here. It’s how I reconnected with you. It never would have happened if I wasn’t in the same city as you.”

“I want to believe we would have found each other no matter what. Fate would have put us in each other’s paths.”

“This isn’t fate; this is fun. It can’t be anything more. How can you not see that?”

“It can be if you just let it. We’re great together. The last couple of months have been the best of my life. Haven’t they been with you?”

She didn’t answer me but opened her mouth for a second and then closed it. I wondered if she was going to say yes. If she had, it would have blown her argument right out the window.

“It doesn’t matter. There was an expiration date on our relationship and by you telling me about your money, I feel like you’re forcing me to be with you.”

“No one is forcing anyone to do anything.” I was taken aback that she would even say such a thing.

“Aren’t you? You come in here, rock my world, tell me you love me, and then share your biggest secret with me. How else am I supposed to see this other than you trying to push me to be with you?”

“You are with me now. If you want, you could be with me for the rest of the time you are in New York, after, or even the rest of our lives. I’m sure you know which one I want,” I said.

“You have made that perfectly clear and that it’s the only option you will take,” she said.

“I never said that.” However, I didn’t want to think about a world where Zoey wasn’t in it, in my bed, every day.

“You may not have said it in those words, but it was implied in everything that you’ve been doing since the moment I walked into your bar. You certainly are doing it now with you professing your love for me.”

“I didn’t want to lie to you.”

“Yet, you thought it was okay to do it before now?”

“Considering how well you’re taking everything, I can’t see why I did,” I said sarcastically.

“Don’t put this on me. You’re the one who came in and turned my life upside down and expected me to be happy about it.”

“I love you. I have loved you since we were kids. The day you walked into the bar was the happiest day of my life. All I want to do is make you happy, to have you in my life, and yes, I want to have a life with you. I want to get married, have kids, and all that entails. You’re the only woman I can imagine doing that with.

“So, yes, I told you everything I was feeling and thinking. I want you to be in my life, and I want you to know everything about my life. I love you. I want to be with you. That is never going to change. It’s up to you what you do with it. ”

“It isn’t fair for you to put that on me.”
