“That will be good. Lauren’s grave is up there, too, right?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said as if he hadn’t thought of that.

“You’ll be busy covering the bar then,” I said.

“It’s not a problem. The place runs so well that it doesn’t need the three of us,” he said.

“Maybe if you’re there, I can come by and see you sometime.”

His face lit up at my words, and he squeezed my hand again. I had forgotten we were still holding hands, but I squeezed it back and smiled at him.

“I would like that,” he said.

“Me too.” I was nervous about what to say next. I didn’t know how to tell him I made a mistake, and I wanted to give us another chance.

“Whatever you want to do, I would be okay with it. I missed you. I missed us,” Brody said.

With his words, he made everything easier and better. He was telling me exactly what I needed to hear. He still wanted us to be together, and he was willing to work with me to make that happen.

“I did too. I hated not talking to or seeing you.”

“Well, you’re seeing me now,” he said.

“And I like what I see,” I said, and he laughed.

“You do? Do you? What else would you like to see?”

“What our future together could look like,” I said and held my breath.

Brody didn’t answer right away but gave me a questioning look. He dropped my hand and leaned back on the couch. “What do you want it to look like? I know what I want, what I have envisioned, but that isn’t only for me to decide. I made that mistake once, and I’m not going to do it again.”

“Where do you want to live?” I asked.

“Wherever you are. Home to me is you.”

“What if I didn’t want to live in New York City? Would you be okay leaving your friends, your business, everything that you’ve worked for here?”

“Yes,” he said and held my gaze.

“It’s that simple for you, isn’t it?”

“Home is where you are. If you went to visit your sister in Africa and you found a town you wanted to settle down in there, I would. I don’t care where I am, as long as I get to be there with you.”

“New York isn’t so bad,” I said and looked around my apartment.

“I kind of like it. There are great things to do, lots of fun stuff we haven’t explored.”

“Like what?”

“The lower east side has a good music scene.”

“That could be fun to check out.”

“Yes, it would,” Brody said slowly. “Do you want to do that with me?”

“I would like that. I would like to do a lot of other things with you too.”

“Such as?” He wasn’t being evasive; I could tell he really wanted to know. He was allowing me the chance to dictate what was going to happen with us going forward. Knowing he could do that, understanding how much he wanted to be with me and still give me my freedom, allowed me to say what was in my heart.
