The doorbell rings again.Damnit. I hang up and cross over to the front door.

When I open it, Carter is standing right outside my door, peering around the hallway. The building is a bit worn and outdated, so I’m sure my home is already a shock for him.

Admittedly, he looks very handsome in his black fitted suit. He even has his hair combed back so it’s out of his face. He’s more than handsome; he’s gorgeous.

His eyes scan me up and down. I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t make my heart race.

“You look…wow,” he says.

“I told you to wait out front,” I say, versus telling him thanks or acknowledging how hothelooks.

“I did, but some guy started honking at me to move, so I decided to park,” he says.

“How convenient.” I open the door all the way so he knows he can come in. “I still need five more minutes.”

“Take all the time you need.” He steps into my apartment.

I shut the door, then start toward my bathroom. “Thanks. As you know, a lot of work goes into lookingwow.”

“I’m patient for such things,” he says, his voice low and smooth.

I turn around before he can catch me blushing.

“So, this is home?” he asks as I return to my mirror to attach my earrings. “How long have you been here?”

“I moved in the same week of my round of interviews,” I say.

I hear him tap the leg of my couch with his shoe. “Nice couch.”

“It’s used.”

“It’s in pretty good condition,” he says.

I hear more moving around, him picking up random things in my living room. Finally, it gets quiet.

“These tables don’t look very sturdy, though,” he says. “You know the legs on this one are wobbly, right?”

I pop my head through the doorway so I can see what table he’s talking about. He’s kneeling beside one of the wooden side tables I have on either end of the couch. Immediately, my interest is lost, and I return to putting the finishing touches on my hair.

“Of course, I do. I assembled everything myself,” I say.

“Oh, then they’re all hanging on by a nail.”

I scoff and step out of the bathroom. “And you can do a better job?”

“Yes, I can.” He rises from the floor. “In college, I assembled all my own furniture. I still do. A lot of the stuff in my place was put together by me.”

I huff. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“It’s easy to find out.”

This time, my face flushes before I can make my escape. Carter’s lips curl up into a devilish smirk. He doesn’t have to look so pleased with himself.

“Are you ready to go now?” he asks.

“I think so.”

I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear and gaze into the small mirror I have hanging on my living room wall. It doesn’t matter what I do, I can’t seem to ease my nerves about tonight. It must be because it’s been a while since the last time I went to one of these events.
