“She seems lovely,” I say.

“She’s always been my favorite aunt,” he says. “And Martin’s a good guy.”

“Do they work in entertainment?”

He nods. “Evelyn’s a screenwriter, and Martin is a film producer.”

I perk up atscreenwriter, but as much as I try to remember if I’ve heard of her before, nothing comes to mind. “Has she written anything I might know?”

A soft smile crosses Carter’s face. “She’s written some pretty good independent films. I’ll have to give you the list. Do you want to grab a table while I get drinks?”

“Sure,” I say with a nod. “Do you have a seating preference?”

Carter points to a pair of tables in the far back corner, away from all the other tables. “Maybe over there. People usually don’t sit at those tables. It’ll be more private.” He sweeps his eyes at me. “If that’s okay with you.”

I feel my body temperature rise, and a shiver runs up and down my spine. “I like that idea,” I say and start toward our table.

“Mia?” Carter calls out, and I turn around. “What do you want?”

I shoot him a smirk. “Whatever you get is fine. Make it good, though.”

“Trust me, I always do,” he says with a wink, then heads over toward the bar.

When I arrive at the furthest table, I take a seat and place my silver evening bag on the table in front of me. This isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It’s still early, but I think I’m actually going to have a good time with Carter tonight.

“Mia?” a familiar voice says from behind me.

I don’t even have to look at him to know who it is.

You have no choice but to face him.

I turn around but remain seated. “Michael,” I say.

Michael is standing behind me, wearing a navy suit with his brown hair slicked back. He sighs as he shifts his weight onto one hip, an unimpressed expression on his face. “I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised to run into you here,” he says, his tone as sharp as a knife.

I furrow my brows as I set my hands on the back of my chair. It’s been weeks since we broke up. Does hehaveto be so angry while we’re in a public space?

“Look, I’m not interested in causing a scene,” I start.

“Oh really?” He scoffs. “You were fine with causing a scene when you stood me up at our wedding.”

“You already know the reason why I didn’t show up,” I say, trying to keep my voice low. “You were cheating on me, Michael. With mybridesmaid.”

“You still should have shown up,” he says, still somehow finding a way to make this my fault. “We could have talked things out and worked through it. That’s what I’ve been trying to do ever since. And you just—”

I let out a huff. “You can’t work through cheating, Michael.”

“People do it all the time.”

I rise from my seat. With my heels on, Michael and I are about the same height. I’m suddenly so painfully aware of how vile his personality is. Was he like this all the time? I must have been too blinded by rose-colored glasses to notice.

“I’m not one of them,” I say, tightening my hands into fists on either side of me.

“Don’t act so innocent. I know the real reason you left. He’s standing over at the refreshments table.”

Carter? He can’t be serious. I cross my arms over my chest. “What doeshehave to do with you cheating?”

“You left me for him,” he says, so matter-of-factly I almost laugh in his face. It’s such an insane conclusion to jump to.
