She scoffs. “Why do you care? You want to convince me to follow through with it?”

I peer up at the street sign. 7th Avenue. We’re close to Times Square, which means busy. She might be in a car now, but Mia might still draw attention if we keep heading in this direction. I should turn at one of these next streets and start looking for someplace quiet.

“It’s not that I care,” I say. “But Iaman accomplice to your escape, so it would be nice to be in the loop a bit. Got cold feet?”

“Absolutely not.” She crosses her arms over her chest. “My decision is final. I’m certain about that.”

I purse my lips. Clearly, she wasn’t certain of this untilaftershe was already on her way to the venue. I mean, she’s fully dressed.

“Did you realize you didn’t love him?” I ask as I keep stealing quick glances at her.

She shoots me a vicious glare. “Why would I marry someone I don’t love?”

I shrug, fighting back how amused I am by her strong relationship ethics. For someone who values love so much, she doesn’t seem to have the same regard for the time that went into making her wedding day possible.

“Some people get married when they aren’t in love,” I say.

“Like who?”

“My cousin Rita. And my Uncle Robby. Actually, a lot of people in my family.” I pause, then look at Mia. “Did he cheat on you?”

She peers over at me but doesn’t say anything. It doesn’t take a genius to know I’m right on the nose.

“Sorry,” I say and make a right on 46th Avenue.

“For what?”

I shake my head. “I just am.”

Mia sits up tall, and she places both hands on my window.

“Hey, watch it,” I warn her. “You’ll smudge the window.”

“You’re heading toward the Church of Saint Mary,” she says with urgency. “Turn around.”

“I’m just driving. You didn’t give me any directions.”

Is this where she was supposed to get married?

“Turn around,” she repeats, this time with more command in her voice.

My heartbeat quickens. I peer around at all possible escape routes, but I’m unable to find anything without having to pass by the church.

“I can’t turn here,” I say. “We have no other choice but to pass it.” I turn to Mia just in time to witness her duck as low to the floor of the car as possible. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Someone might see me.” Despite already being out of view, she covers her face with her hands.

I’m smiling ear to ear. “Stay down. I’ll let you know once we’ve driven past it.”

We drive by the church, which is full of people very obviously dressed in wedding attire.

“Is everything okay?” she asks, wincing.

“Yeah,” I say, my voice growing quiet. I’m only realizing now how serious this is. I’m practically stowing precious cargo around Manhattan. With a sigh, I rest an assuring hand on her shoulder. “You can get up now.”

She eyes my hand, then slowly sits up properly in her seat. She pats her hair down and brushes it back behind her shoulders, exposing her prominent collarbone. “Did you see anyone outside the church?” she asks.

“A lot of people. Including a guy with brown hair in a blue suit.”
