He shook his head. “The techies are still working on that.” He finished typing and looked up at her. “You ready?”

She hopped off the desk and walked around to him, leaning in to plant a warm kiss on his lips. It was a promise of what dessert would be like. “Let’s go home, Agent Stone, so I can get you out of these clothes.”

EPILOGUE

Gabby leaned back on her hospital bed, trying to get some sleep. Phineas had left hours ago. Her mom was notified once they arrived at WANC and came to get him. She visited for a while before asking a nurse if they could say goodnight to Gabby’s father. Her parents were divorced but got along pretty well.

Gabby’s mind wouldn’t rest. All Phin and the other agents talked about was Sandy, the woman who held her and the others captive. What they didn’t know was Gabby saw Sandy’s partner. She tried like hell to tell the agents who attempted to question her or the nurse and doctor who performed all sorts of tests on her. All she could get out was the word “no.” They reassured her that they weren’t going to harm her. They thought she was telling them to stop. They didn’t understand she was trying to let them know they were wrong. They were all wrong.

One of the doctors from earlier gave her a notepad. She knew what she wanted to say, but when she gripped the pen, incoherent lines and swirls scrawled across the page.

Gabby pulled the covers up to her chin, trying to fight off the chill from her underground concrete cell. The cold seemed to permanently seep into her bones.

She shut off the bedside lamp, squeezing her eyes shut. If she were to get better, she’d need rest. And as soon as she could talk again, that son-of-a-bitch Dr. Grimm was going down. If she had to fly there on her own dark wings, that bastard was going to pay.

The End
