“This person has a name.”

Her nostrils flare. “I have a few names for you. For starters—”

Lyric cuts her off. “I’d prefer to finish this before my son is of dating age.”

Eden throws her arms in the air. “And I don’t know what ‘this’ is. I’m staging a perfectly lawful sit-in to protest the expansion of the brewery. There’s no reason for the cops to get involved.”

“You’re wrong,” I growl. “The mayor of the town shouldn’t participate in a sit-in. The mayor should be impartial.”

“But Moon’s one of my best friends. I rely on her support.”

Moon throws her arm over Eden’s shoulders. “Thanks, honey. I love you, too.”

And now I feel like an ass. Until my brother straightened her out, Moon refused to accept support from her friends. Hell, even my mom moved to Winter Falls at Riley’s request to support Moon whose own parents abandoned her.

Lyric clears his throat. “How about this? We’ll have an extra business meeting to discuss the expansion.”

I scowl. “But the expansion was already approved.”

“The expansion was approved by the committee, not the town,” he explains. “The town inhabitants have the opportunity to veto a decision by the committee.”

Fuck. I was afraid of this. Winter Falls doesn’t play by the normal rules.

“I’ll agree to an extra business meeting if the sit-in stops.”

That way I don’t have to worry about Eden losing sleep or being unable to open her shop tomorrow. Hold on. That’s not what I meant.

A sit-in will rile up the residents who might then veto the expansion. That’s the reason it should stop. Not because I’m worried about Eden. The hippie gardener means nothing to me.

“What do you say, Eden? Will you stop the sit-in?” Lyric asks.

Eden nods. “Of course. There’s no reason to continue the sit-in if we’re going to discuss the matter at a town meeting.”

“Boo!” Sage hisses from the hallway. “I was in the mood for s’mores.”

“Shake on it,” Lyric orders and I reach my hand out toward Eden.

As soon as our hands touch, a spark ignites and an electric current travels throughout my body warming me from within. Judging by how wide Eden’s eyes are, she feels it, too. She yanks her hand back and rushes out the door.

“I told you no s’mores, Sage!” she scolds.

I stare at the place where Eden was standing. Shit. I need to get over this obsession with a woman who I can never have.

If I ask nicely, will you release the Kraken at the business meeting? ~ Text from Eden to Harmony

“It’s going to be fine, Eden,” Moon says as she comes up behind me.

“I know.”

“Which is why you’re standing on the steps leading to the courthouse frozen in fear?”

I scowl. “I’m not frozen in fear.”

“Are you frozen in anticipation?”

“Frozen in anticipation isn’t a thing.”
