My brow furrowed when his tone turned worried. “Yeah. It is.”

Sloane whistled low. I knew what he was about to say. And it had been nagging at the back of my mind all day, but thinking about it only made my gut ache, so I pushed it aside.

“Just be careful, man. You know these tourist babes are only on vacation. They all leave, eventually.”

Not mine, I wanted to argue. Maisy leaving was unacceptable. Unless…

I cleared my throat, forcing the vice around my words to loosen.

“She can leave all she wants… as long as I go with her.”

I hung up the phone more determined than ever to reach her, and show her I was so fucking in love with her.

In love.

There, I said it. To myself, but still.

When I was done with Maisy tonight, she wouldn’t need those words to know it was true. My actions would speak loudly enough.

I realized I was in love with Maisy as I watched her walk away from the debacle with Widow Milton. It killed me to let her go off by herself after everything she’d witnessed. The minute I was done talking to the island authorities, I’d phoned her, desperate to explain my actions.

What I got instead was an earful of her beautiful fiery mind. And I fell even harder.

An hour later, I was knocking on the door of the suite she shared with her friends. Helena answered, looking uncomfortable.

“She’s in the shower,” she said. “I told her you’d show, but she said she wasn’t waiting for you.”

I raised an eyebrow and Helena sighed.

“Okay, what she really said was, ‘If he thinks I’m gonna be waiting for him all laid out like a sexy buffet, he’s got another thing coming.’ Then she got a devious look and said, ‘Let's see if he can handle me in my natural state.’ There. That's the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” Helena grabbed her purse off the table by the door and swung it over her shoulder. “Now, my job is done. I’m outta here.”

“Thanks,” I told her but she was already scooting past me to hurry down the hall with a muttered, “Maisy’s room is the one on the right.”

Stepping into the suite, I shut the door behind me and followed Helena’s directions. I tapped on the jamb lightly and when there was no answer, I slipped inside. From the attached bathroom, I could hear the shower running.

Maisy, in all her curvaceous glory, was completely naked in there. Only a bit of wood and drywall separated us.

I had half a mind to just walk right in there and give her my apology through the see-through glass door. But then I started thinking with my head and not my dick, and realized I should stick to the plan.

The plan was good.

Decided, I kicked off my shoes and removed my shirt before lounging on the bed to wait for my Maisy to emerge in her “natural state”.

Chapter Nine

Maisy

My stomach flip-flopped as I bent at the waist to wrap a towel around my wet hair and straightened again. Waiting to see if Malachi would show up had the butterflies in my middle going manic.

I put on a brave face for Helena, but I was nervous as hell. Using the shower to wind down had seemed like a good idea. Except I didn’t feel any calmer.

Several deep breaths later, I pulled on the thick resort robe that had been taunting me from a hook on the door. It looked comfy enough to cushion the blows from today, and thick enough to soak up my tears if Malachi turned out to be all talk.

No, I didn’t believe that about him.

Last night, he was earnest and sweet. And sexy as hell. We connected on a level I’d never experienced before. It had to mean something.

Just a customer, my ass. I wouldn’t accept it. Not until I heard it straight from his lips.
