“Well, Miss Milton, I’ll be happy to send someone over to help you in just a few moments. After I finish here, I need to head back to the office.” That wasn’t a lie, I’d been shirking my duties to stick close to the pool the last few days just because I wanted to be near Maisy, but cabana host was not my job title and I’d let some important things pile up in my absence.

“Malachi, I’ve told you repeatedly, call me Lois.”

Gag.

Maisy stiffened in front of me. How I handled this situation was going to set the tone for how she treated me after this, and I wasn’t letting her out of my sight yet.

“Oh, Miss Milton, a treasure like yourself should be treated with the utmost respect at all times. I couldn’t be so disrespectful as to call you by your first name.”I wish I didn’t have to deal with you at all.“I’ll send Ethan down in a few moments and he’ll give you the royal treatment.”

I thought she’d argue, especially since she’d been chasing after me like an aging, horny bunny lately, but she didn’t. I knew she was sweet on Ethan too, and he was someone adept at handling people like her.

Copious amounts of flattery, a thick skin and the ability to let shit run off his back were his most positive attributes.

Also, Lois was a heavy tipper, and I knew Ethan sent money to his mom and sister back home. He’d hate me for a little while, but he’d forgive me when it came tip time.

Lois pouted for a moment but brightened almost immediately, most likely because I still offered her a toy to play with.

“I think I would like my private cabana this afternoon. Have Ethan meet me there and have him bring my usual.” Her usual was a bottle of Woodford Reserve and two glasses so she could make Ethan drink with her. I’d apologize for his hangover later.

The widow scuttled off, her bathing suit so loose it flapped in the wind, threatening to expose her buns.

Quickly, I looked away.

My time touching Maisy was sadly over, but I wasn’t leaving without making my intentions known.

I bent low, my lips almost touching Maisy’s cheek so I could whisper in her ear. I smiled when she shivered in response.

“I want to see you when I’m not working. I want to have an actual conversation with no one else demanding my attention.”

“What if I tell you no?” she whispered back, equally low, although I knew her three companions were craning to hear every word.

“I know where you sleep at night.”

She shivered again. “That’s seriously creepy.”

“Maybe if I was someone else, but I’m not. I’m me and you’re you. And you’ll call me later today, after six, and tell me where we’re going to meet.” I shoved the small paper card containing my contact information directly into her palm and curled her fingers around it..

I didn’t even look to see Maisy’s reaction. Just nodded to the other three, pulled an about face, and exited the pool area.

With the amount of work I hadn’t done the last few days, I’d be lucky to get off before six, but it wasn’t impossible.

I didn’t know when I would get my hands on Maisy again, but I knew one thing for sure, her friends were on my side.

I made a mental note to send Marcel over with snacks.

And after dealing with Lois Milton, poor Ethan would need a bonus. Double bonus.

Ahh, I loved my job.

Chapter Three

Maisy

I paced the pristine executive suite, the glossy business card Malachi had given me in hand. It was after six and the place was otherwise empty. The girls had already dressed to the nines and left for a night out on Ember Island’s glittering boardwalk.

An outing from which I was “lovingly uninvited”.

Because according to them, I should definitely call the number on the card and meet Malachi tonight.
