“Calm down, ma’am,” Seth says, struggling to push her back without hurting her.

“Let go of me!” Millie shouts, clawing at Seth’s face. “I talked to you when no one else would. I tried to be kind to you. How dare you come in here and act like nothing ever happened to us? Bring me the blue pills or I’ll fucking kill you!”

Two male nurses hurry forward and they grab each of her arms. Millie fights them, kicking and screaming.

A third nurse moves forward with a syringe. While his companions hold her down, he slips the needle into the crook of her arm.

It takes almost a minute for the drug to have an effect. Millie’s eyes go out of focus and her speech starts slurring. Soon, she goes completely limp in their arms.

One of the nurses picks her up in his arms and walks out of the dining hall.

Shock and grief crash through me as I watch him take her away. Every word she said was the truth.

Millie had been the only person who spoke to me in that hellish place. She was the only one I could call a friend.

Her outburst and harsh words don’t hurt me. It’s the way she’s still suffering that breaks my heart.

“Rory, are you okay?” Oliver’s voice draws me out of my shock.

I look toward him and Simon. “I’m fine.”

“Shit, she got you,” Raiden says, looking closely at Seth.

That’s when I notice the thin, long crimson lines etched on Seth’s cheek.

“Oh no!” I moan, hurrying toward him. “You’re hurt.”

“It’s nothing,” he says at once. “Just a scratch, that’s all.”

“She hurt you too,” says Oliver, gently holding up my wrists.

Looking down, I notice dark bruises on my pale skin. Millie must’ve held me hard enough to cause them.

“I don’t even feel them,” I say, looking around me.

The women surrounding us haven’t stirred despite the commotion that just happened. They continue to eat their food with dead expressions on their faces.

Suddenly, it feels like I’m back in those underground cages.

The sunshine seems to dim as my vision goes dark. No matter where I look, I can’t find Seth, Oliver, and Simon. Surrounded by the omegas with dead gazes, I can’t tell whether I’m still awake or trapped in one of my nightmares.

Before an answer can come to me, everything suddenly goes black.

“Rory!”

“Rory!”

“Rory!”

Three distinct voices echo in the blackness of my mind.

I try to respond to them but it’s hard to do so when I can’t seem to find my own voice.

“Rory, answer me!” Seth’s voice breaks through the dark veil suffocating me.
