“I’m so worried about her,” the mayor says in a strained voice. “She’d been looking and sounding so happy lately that I started to hope again. My relationship with Rory has never been better. Did you know she spoke to me almost every day these past weeks?”

Anxiety settles in my gut like a stone but I don’t let it show on my face. Instead, I smile at the mayor like there’s nothing to worry about.

“We’ll find her,” I promise him. “I’m sure she’ll come back soon. I’ll just check the street cameras to make sure she’s safe. Once we figure out where she went, we’ll let you know immediately. In the meantime, you should go downstairs and look after your guests.”

“Do you believe everything’s going to be fine?” The desperate look on the aging man strikes a chord in my heart. Mr. Bailley is just a father who’s worried sick about his daughter.

“We’ll find Rory before the night’s over,” I promise him.We have to or I’ll fucking tear this neighborhood apart to find her,I silently think to myself.

“All right, then,” he says, standing up and looking utterly exhausted. “I’ll leave it all up to you.”

When he leaves the room, I let my emotions take over me.

Even though I have no idea what’s happening, a deep intuition is continuously warning me. Rory is in danger.

Just hang tight, I silently pray in my mind. We’ll find you and bring you home with us. I’ll never break my promise to protect you. I love you, Rory.”
