Jake may not be the fairytale alpha every omega dreams of, but he’s mine.

His love hurts sometimes but there’s nothing I value more in my partner than loyalty. As long as he loves me, I’m willing to overlook his flaws. A couple of bruises aren’t enough to make me change my heart.

“I miss you, Rory,” Kaida says in a choked voice. Her eyes shine with sincerity, slamming me with guilt again.

I’m about to tell her that I miss her too when a familiar voice whispers in my ear.

“There you are, darling,” Jake says, catching my earlobe between his teeth.

A shiver runs through me as I turn to look at him.

Dressed in a luxurious gray suit, Jake looks stunningly handsome. A warm smile curves his lips as he stares down at me. “You look beautiful tonight,” he says, leaning down to capture my lips.

His familiar scent washes over me, comforting me at once.

“Are you still working as a junior assistant for the senator?” Kaida asks, making us break away.

Jake turns his attention toward her and his good humor vanishes. His smile gets replaced by a sneer as he bares his teeth at her.

Kaida stares back at him unflinchingly.

This is what I’ve always admired about her. She’s amazingly strong in her opinions and beliefs and is not afraid to voice them.

“Are you so incompetent at your job that your bosses won’t give you a promotion after serving in the same position for six years?” Kaida says, grinning mockingly.

“You’re just an omega,” Jake says in a cold tone. “Do you even have the ability to comprehend what happens in the office of a senator?”

Kaida’s expression turns into an aggressive sneer. “I don’t need to be in politics to know you’re utterly incompetent.”

“I don’t care for promotions and titles,” Jake retorts in a cold tone. His gaze sweeps around the dining area before fixing on me. “What is she doing here?” he asks me. “Did you invite her?”

“It’s a restaurant, jackass,” Kaida replies before I can answer him. “One that you don’t own. I can be here for however long I want.”

Jake doesn’t respond but I can tell he’s simmering at my friend’s rudeness.

Helen and Leila watch their interaction nervously but they’re too intimidated by Jake to say a word.

“Let’s go to our table,” I say, desperate to break the tension between them.

A heavy breath escapes him. He gives a grim nod and wraps an arm around my waist. “Come on, then.” Steering me away from Kaida, he leads me across the dining hall to a cozy corner.

A large bouquet of red roses greets me when I reach the table.

“These are for you,” Jake says, picking up the lush bouquet and handing it to me.

Warmth floods my chest as I look into his eyes. “Thank you,” I say, holding the roses close to me. Their heady fragrance wafts into my nostrils, easing my discomfort from meeting my friends. “You’ve been so busy lately but you still remembered it’s our first anniversary.”

He smiles. “Of course, I remember.” Leaning in, he kisses me.

A little groan escapes him as he pulls away too soon. “Let’s wait until we’re done with dinner,” he croons.

A hot flush spreads on my cheeks as I nod quickly.

Pulling out a chair, he helps me into it.

Jake is the perfect gentleman. I can feel people’s eyes on us as he proceeds to order a bottle of wine for our table. His presence makes me forget all about Kaida and her concerns.

Within minutes, I’m seated close to him and basking under his intense gaze.
