A grin spreads on my face. “Yep. You have no idea how keen she was to meet you. I think it’s the only reason she agreed to follow us here.”

Closing his eyes, he pulls me in for a hug.

“You need to have more confidence,” Oliver says, coming over to hug Seth from behind. “You’reourbrother, after all. Why do you keep forgetting you share the same genes as us?”

A chuckle escapes me as he breaks away. He gazes between me and Oliver with a somber look. “Do you guys feel she’s the one too?”

I glance toward Oliver. The answer is clear in his eyes.

“Yes,” we both answer together. “Rory’s the one for us.”

My chest expands, allowing air to rush into my lungs. It’s exhilarating to finally speak it out. “Rory is ours.”

“Then, we’re going to have to protect her,” Seth says in a grim tone.

I nod. “We’re going to be her knights,” I say. “We’ll protect her and punish the people who hurt her. The rats we killed during the raid aren’t the only ones hiding behind the banner of the Black Widow. There are those who have the audacity to sell off a mayor’s daughter.”

Seth balls his hands into fists.

“Do you think Rory was an intentional target?” Oliver says slowly. “Mayor Bailley is one of the few betas who hold an influential position in the state. Assholes who support the Black Widow must hate seeing him bringing in more changes that benefit those belonging to lower designations.”

“Fucking designations!” I hiss through clenched teeth. “They mean nothing in today’s world! Hard work and dedication are all that matter. Being born as an alpha doesn’t necessarily give you power over other people’s lives!”

“They need to be taught this lesson the hard way,” Oliver says, his eyes alight with rage.

“We’ll worry about them later. For now, we should think of our living arrangement,” says Seth. “Rory will feel more comfortable if we shifted to one of the residential cottages. We’ll be the only ones there and that’ll help her come out of her shell and not feel so conscious among strangers. If she wants more company, she can always come here to meet Mom and Grandpa.”

Oliver and I nod.

“Let’s do that,” I say, loving the idea of having Rory all to ourselves. “This way, she’ll get a chance to know us closely. She’ll see what she means to us.”

“I can’t wait to show her,” Oliver says, his eyes mirroring the desire swirling within me. “Rory must know how precious she is to us.”

“It’ll be an uphill task,” Seth says in a grim tone. “We can only imagine what she went through in those underground vaults. We’ve got to be slow and gentle with her.”

“You can be as slow and gentle as you want,” I say, shaking my head. “She likes us being direct with her. You should see the way she blushes when we make her laugh.”

A slow sigh escapes him. “Let’s get out of here and see if she’s done talking with her dad.”

“Yeah, let’s go and see if she needs any help convincing her dad to let her stay here,” says Simon, leading the way out of the room.

We follow him down the hallway and into the entrance hall.

Rory is hugging her dad tightly while he gently pats her back. The sight sends relief flooding through me.

Mayor Bailley’s sudden appearance had put me on edge. I was worried he’d take Rory away just when we were starting to get to know her.

As if she’s become aware of our presence, she breaks away from her dad and looks around him. A bright smile blossoms on her face as her gaze settles on me and my brothers. For a second, I’m reminded of the first time I saw her.

Rory’s smile had been just as beautiful as it is now.

Hope flickers in my chest. Maybe we’ll be able to heal her heart, after all.

“It’s all right,” she says, walking over to us. Taking Seth’s big hands in hers, she smiles up at him. “Dad says I can stay here for a while.”

Seth lightly caresses her head.

Closing her eyes, she leans into his touch like a sweet kitten.
