With that, he storms past Tomcat and through the door leading to the injured club members.

“This is madness!” Quana cries as her voice does that squeaky thing mine did earlier. “I’m not staying here.”

Tomcat shrugs. “The door is that way.”

After studying my sister, I glance at Hobo’s sister. They’re a lot alike in that they hold themselves with endless confidence. I might be the basic bitch wearing mom jeans, but I know my place in the world. That’s more than I could claim a month ago. Even if these two superior bitches joined forces, they couldn’t make me leave Hobo.

I step back and sit next to Glenn. “Quana, you should leave. McMurdo Valley is my home. You’ll need to find someone else to run your restaurants.”

Ignoring her outraged expression, I text Irina to let her know what’s happening. She replies in a way that makes me feel like we share a bond that I can never have with Quana or anyone from my past. Kourtney settles next to me after telling her bodyguard to escort my sister to her hotel.

I smile at Kourtney, trying to fake strength I don’t feel. Hobo is just behind that door. I should shove my way through like Ruin did and demand to see my man. Except Kourtney’s not even doing that, and I bet she could get away with such a move.

Powerless in this situation, we hold hands and wait for news about the man who saved us both.

TOMMY

The emergency wardis chaotic when I’m wheeled inside. I’m moved to a narrow room with no windows or bathroom. My wounds are stitched up. I’m given quality pain killers and fluids. Closing my eyes, I listen to the activities just outside my room.

I hear how the still unconscious Dice cracked his skull, so they’re running tests to check the extent of the injury.

I hear the surgeon talking to Walla Walla about Yagger. He tries to sound hopeful, but I sense he isn’t sure our youngest club member will survive.

The doctors working at this county hospital are solid. Back when they were building this place, Ruin, Todd Rogers, and Urick Halvorson agreed to pony up a bigger budget to ensure quality care for our people.

I hear the Halvorson name a few times as I rest my eyes. Not the old man but his son Erik who was shot in the back by one of his workers. I get the feeling the asshole won’t ever walk again.

After Eagle learns his ribs are bruised rather than broken, he comes to sit in my little room. I rest better knowing he’s nearby. My thoughts return to Xenia and me at the tent. Maybe I doze off because I suddenly have my president right up in my face.

“Hobo,” Ruin says, “can you hear me?”

“Sure.”

Ruin glances back at Armor and Tomcat entering my little space. Walla Walla soon shoves his big ass inside and shuts the door.

“You did good today,” Ruin tells me. “Yagger and Dice were done for without you and Eagle to save their asses.”
