“What’s the deal with this Banta place?” Goose asks when no one says anything.

Her brother crosses his arms and clenches his jaw. “It’s all mobbed up. A biker club acts as muscle for the local crime family. The place has several casinos and other gambling crap. Lots of tourists. If we could ride in quiet, there’d be no issues. But we’d be going there to kill up to ten assholes. Halvorson’s daughter sounds like a handful, too. Not sure any of it can be done quietly. Besides, killing the assholes would be cleaner in our own territory.”

“It’ll have to be me,” Walla Walla says, immediately drawing a dark frown from Ruin. “Everyone’s banged up or has a woman or kids.”

Goose shoves him. “I’m not banged up, and I don’t have any critters or a ball and chain.”

“Fine. You can come with me. That’s that.”

“I’m about to punch you so hard,” she sneers, really hating his new bossy nature.

Ruin puts an end to their potential battle by pointing out, “I haven’t decided if anyone’s going.”

Scowling, Walla Walla asks, “Do you really think they’re going after Halvorson’s daughter?”

“Sure. Why would Peter lie?” Ruin mutters.

Without missing a beat, Armor replies, “To get us to a city where we might not come out.”

“He’s got to know I wouldn’t send everyone,” Ruin replies.

Nomad jumps in with, “We’re a small club and half of us are hobbled.”

Gritting his teeth, Ruin points out, “Even if it was just a handful of us left, we could erase the Halvorson family and burn their ranch to the ground.”

Armor grunts his disapproval. “This thing isn’t our problem.”

Ruin doesn’t respond immediately. When he does, his voice goes soft and edgy. “Often when an enemy fails at taking down hard targets, they’ll move on to softer ones. That’s our women and kids.”

“That’s just Halvorson planting worries in our heads,” Armor insists, refusing to back down like he might normally. “These fuckers are hitting someone we don’t know. Let Peter Halvorson pay for a security team to go save his damn sister. Why the fuck should our blood be on the line for them?”

“Because I want those assholes dead,” Ruin sneers, losing control. Everyone goes still as he regains his composure by exhaling hard like a pissed animal. “Yagger’s never going to be in one piece again. Our people bled, so those fuckers need to die. Except they’ve gone underground. Right now, our only lead is Halvorson’s daughter. I doubt all of the surviving assholes will be in Banta City. If we can grab one of them and get him to talk, we’ll be able to hunt down the others. No one in the Valley is safe until those assholes are buried.”

“I said I’ll go,” Walla Walla mutters when Ruin looks angered by our silence. “I’m also really charming. If the Banta City big wigs give me grief, I’ll lay my charms on real thick until they back down.”

Ruin glares at Walla Walla’s smiling face. Our president is mostly angry over how he can’t be the one to lead the hunting party.

“I’ll go, too,” Goose insists. “But I make no promises on Walla Walla returning with both balls if he keeps bossing me around.”

Armor instantly wants to complain about his sister going. All these years, he’s tried to act like she’s one of the guys. Deep down, though, he’s soft over her like he isn’t over the rest of us.

“I could go,” Smokey offers half-heartedly. “My knee’s twisted up, but I think I can ride in a day or two.”

“If this happens, it should happen soon,” Ruin says and then glances at Smokey. “You might not be able to ride right now, but you can still fire weapons and throw down. We need numbers in the Valley in case those assholes show up while Walla Walla and Goose are in Banta City.”

“So, we’re set on that?” Armor mutters, doing nothing to hide his irritation.

“If those Banta City fuckers get wind of us making moves in their territory, they’re not going to fall for Walla Walla’s charm,” Ruin growls at Armor to Walla Walla’s annoyance. “But they might fall for Goose’s.”

“Yeah,” Goose says and looks down at her C-cup-sized tits.

Armor holds his tongue, exhaling hard. I see him and Ruin doing their silent-conversation shit. My gaze flashes to Eagle who rolls his eyes once he knows what I’m thinking. Our president and VP share a fucking brain.

“There is some good news,” Armor says after Ruin gets them on the same page. “Todd Rogers has offered up his security team to patrol the Valley until shit cools down. He’s also bringing in more men. This place will soon be crawling with his hired goons.”

Rolling his eyes again, Eagle grunts. “Todd’s just showing off to make the Halvorson jackasses look bad.”

“Yes,” Ruin replies. “But he’s also scared for his own ass. If the club goes down, he’s vulnerable. I made sure he remembered that fact when we talked. Now, his money will buy us extra muscle for the time being. We should also increase security around our homes and do regular check-ins.”
