Exhaling deeply, I make a mental note to give the cold shoulder to Wynonna when we share a space again.

“What can I say that you don’t already know?”

“I only have two very simple questions,” Kourtney says over background noise.

“Where are you?”

“Denver airport. I’m flying back.”

“For me?”

“Good Lord no. Wait, should I? Are you in danger? Should I swoop in and save you with my ten-inch stilettos?”

Grinning at her laughter, I hope we can keep the conversation light.

“Now to my questions,” Kourtney says, getting serious. “What the fuck is wrong with you and what the fuck is wrong with her? Answer those two very simple questions, and I’ll let you return to your deep thinking.”

“What deep thinking?”

“I’ve always assumed when you sit in nature, you’re pondering about the universe and meaning of life.”

“No.”

“Then, what do you think about?”

“Nothing.”

Kourtney sighs. “Men. Now, answer my questions.”

“I don’t understand what you’re asking,” I mutter, screwing with her since this entire call is meant to screw with me.

“Why would you keep this shit from me? I’m your little sister. I have rights. One of them is to know about important things in your life. Didn’t I mention when I met Michael. I even explained in great detail how big his cock is.”

“You really don’t need to do that.”

“Sure, but I want to.”

Standing where my house might one day be, I exhale hard and try to find the right words to inspire Kourtney to leave me alone. “I didn’t tell you because I don’t talk about my feelings.”

“No, you don’t. Is she why you got the haircut last year?”

“No, I just met Xenia. I did that stuff for you. Just like I said the last dozen times you brought it up.”

“I never need you to change for me.”

“Sure, princess.”

Kourtney snorts. “Fine, then my second question is what’s wrong with her? I assume you’re embarrassed about something and that’s why you didn’t tell me.”

“No, I just told you why I didn’t tell you.”

“Is she weird?”

“No. She’s a nice normal lady.”

Kourtney doesn’t respond, and my sister is rarely at a loss for words.

“You’re wondering why she’s with me,” I say when she won’t spit it out.
