“I heard Smokey say something about cards,” I whisper as I stroke Hobo’s furrowed brow. “Can we sit outside after dinner and play games?”

Hobo nods at my request. We rest quietly for nearly a half hour before I sit up and straddle him. Hobo gets out of his head and focuses on me. We kiss and talk about our day. He cuddles his face in my hair, inhaling sharply and settling down.

No one is around when I cook dinner. I leave the chili cheese casserole leftovers in the fridge for the others while Hobo and I move our evening outside.

An hour later, six men and one woman burst into the house, talking over each other and seeming rowdier than normal. Hobo tenses when they start throwing around a football outside.

Walla Walla notices us at the patio table with our playing cards. When he moseys in our direction, Hobo growls like a dog offering a most deadly warning.

The big blond, who has a few inches on Hobo, leans down until he’s nearly nose to nose with his club brother.

“Use your words,” Walla Walla says in a patient voice as if speaking to a child.

Hobo lifts his upper lip and snarls the words, “Fuck off.”

“Was that really so difficult?” Walla Walla asks before standing up and announcing, “I want everyone to leave these two alone. That’s that.”

“Stop saying that,” Goose grumbles while rushing up onto the deck. “You’re not Ruin. I’m not listening to you.”

“I’m the benevolent dictator of this lodge. You must obey me.”

Goose stands chest to chest with Walla Walla who has a foot on her. I smile at their antics. Hobo also wants to find humor in the scene, but he’s still waiting for someone to ruin our good time. If he’s this tense with his closest friends, I can’t imagine what he’ll be like when the Pigsty is full of college-aged women.

As for Kourtney’s eventual troublemaking, well, I’m not even going to guess how badly that might turn out.

TOMMY

On Friday, Xenia’sgoodbye kiss leaves me with a raging boner. I grudgingly ride away from the shop and start making my rounds. Eagle texts while I’m on the road, saying he’s got the day to himself.

I ride toward his location near Ruin’s mayoral office. On the way, I spot a yellow Halvorson truck driven by one of their workers. He lingers at the light to my right even after it turns green. Feeling the asshole playing peekaboo with me, I stare directly at him. If he wants to start something, I’m right fucking here.

The guy finally gets his ass moving. Yet, I still feel tension in the air. An undercurrent of anticipation maybe.

Not from my guys, though. I roll up to Eagle to find Yagger and Dice just riding off.

Over the rumble of his idling hog, Eagle explains, “Several Halvorson trucks were spotted near the Pigsty. The security cameras show they’ve left, but we’re riding over to check out the area.”
