“When you get home from the hospital, Xenia’s going to cook you whatever you want,” I promise. “So, start thinking up a menu with your favorite stuff.”

Yagger perks up ever so slightly. His eyes seem to sharpen like he’s more aware now.

“I miss going to Willie’s Burger Bash. They had really great food when I was stoned. Do you think Xenia can make stuff like they do?”

“Most definitely. Her parents owned a few burger restaurants back in the day. She can adjust the recipe until you get exactly what you like.”

Yagger’s eyes remain sharp as long as I keep talking about Xenia and food. I paint a picture of him back at the Pigsty, banged up but okay. Xenia’s in the kitchen, making him all the foods he’s missed since Canary Basin became off limits. Once he grabs hold of his future, Yagger loses the fear in his eyes.

I don’t know if the doctors can really fix up all the damage he’s suffered. I’m unsure what’s wrong with Dice. Eagle stays with our club brother while I wait with Yagger until the ambulances and cops arrive. The paramedics insist I get checked out. Between the bullets and rough bush, I’m covered in wounds and blood.

In the past, I’d have insisted I jump back on my hog and go look for trouble.

Despite my earlier urge to burn down the world, I’ve come to my senses after talking about Xenia with Yagger.

No longer a fading dream, my woman feels real again. I can see her smile and hear her voice. I imagine how scared she must be. Only my arms around her will soothe that fear.

That’s why I don’t play hero or badass. McMurdo Valley is back under control of the Steel Berserkers Motorcycle Club and its allies. The assholes are on the run. My president orders everyone injured to the hospital. With the battle over, I need to get back to my woman.

XENIA

My day began in thebest way. I woke to find Hobo watching me. His gaze was so relaxed. He’s struggled with moving back to the Pigsty full time. I often catch him staring out the window as if desperate to break free of his prison.

However, this morning, he looked like a man unburdened. We made love for an hour like the world didn’t exist outside the bedroom suite.

For breakfast, I made savory crepes for everyone. Hobo’s fellow bikers treat me warmly, even if there’s no denying how I’m the odd woman out in their wild bunch.

I arrived at XYZ Coffee, feeling like my life had finally settled in the right direction.

Then, I get a warning from Hobo about locking down the shop and staying put. I don’t know anything about his club’s enemies or what’s normal in their life. That’s why I immediately do as Hobo wishes by locking up the shop and setting out the “CLOSED” sign.

Sitting behind the counter, I’m ready to duck down if anyone unfamiliar shows up.

As usual, I ignore the latest round of messages from my sister, assuming they’re more of the same “I’m worried. Do you need money? Are you in danger?” stuff like she’s been sending for days.

Rather than read her messages, I text Irina to check if she’s heard anything. Her silence rackets up my fear until I text Wynonna for information.
