“Got it.”

Ryder climbed into the van, and I watched as it sped away with squealing tires, Josh right next to me, his body language screaming defeat. He stumbled back, but I gripped him. I couldn’t let him go now.

“I want to see my son.” Emotion brightened Josh’s eyes as he tried to pull away. “Please.”

“I need you to trust me.”

“You kidnapped me—”

“The only way for you to keep your son safe is to come with me.”

Josh took a step back, and I sensed that he was about to run. I pulled my weapon. Josh froze, raising his hands.

“I’m not going to shoot you,” I said. “Take it.”

I held out my gun to him, and he paled.

“What?”

“I’m trying to help you.”

“You pointed a gun at me. You kidnapped me from the station. You fucked me and recorded it! How is any of thathelpingme?”

“Take my gun. Then you can makeallthe decisions.”

We stood at an impasse, but Josh lowered his hands, reached out, and with great caution took the gun from me. It was obvious he’d never held a gun in his life, clutching it awkwardly, his hands shaky, but after a pause, he pointed it right at my chest.

“Take me to see my son.”

ChapterFive

Josh

I’m pointinga gun at Ethan.

I’d never held a gun, let alone pointed one at a person, and I couldn’t stop shaking. Was the safety on or off? Would Iactuallybe able to shoot if Ethan didn’t take me to see Ben?

Where is Ben? Is he safe?

Ethan’s gaze narrowed, and he took a step away from me. Was he going to run? Did that mean I wouldn’t get to see Ben? Was he going to leave without telling me what was going on?

“Don’t move,” I snapped, and my hands started shaking more.

“The safety is on,” Ethan explained, taking another step away.

“You can’t go!”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Ethan took another small step back.

“I’ll figure it out!” I didn’t know where the safety was, moving my fingers to see if there was a catch I should be flicking. I stopped when it hit me that I could shoot Ethan by accident, and there was no way in hell I would fire a gun atanyone, whatever the circumstances.

“The safety is right there by your thumb—”

“I found it!” I lied.

“I’ll show you.”

“I don’t need you to show me—”
