“How the fuck would I know?” I wanted them to leave me alone to wallow in my grief.

“Aren’t you seeing each other?” Neil asked.

“Were, Neil. Were, seeing each other. I guess I was more invested than Zack and he couldn't deal with my ugliness after all.”

“Our brother is a lot of things but, he is not so shallow as to allow a few scars to bother him,” Lance retorted.

“You are a long way from being ugly,” Neil added. “Although at the moment you look like shit. Your eyes are all red and puffy and when did you last shower?”

“Not helping, Neil,” Stacey said.

“Sorry,” he mumbled.

“What happened?” Stacey asked gently.

“I have no idea. Everything was great, he was eating breakfast, then all of a sudden…What day is it?”

“Monday,” Stacey answered.

“Monday? Anyway, he stopped eating, got dressed and rushed out of here like the hounds of hell were at his fucking heels. That was Saturday and I haven't heard from him since. I guess he couldn't deal with my scars after all.” My voice broke and I buried my head in Stacey's chest.

Neil spun towards the door. “I know where he is, I'll get him to call you Natalie.”

“Don’t bother. Have a nice life.”

The brothers left the apartment as quickly as they’d arrived.

“Come and sit down and tell me exactly what happened.” Stacey led me to the lounge, and we sat side by side.

“I don't know what happened. Like I said, everything was great and then he left without saying a word.” I gazed at my best friend. “I lost my heart to him, and he threw it back in my face. I will never allow another man into my life.” Tears poured down my cheeks.

Stacey drew my head onto her shoulder and sat rubbing my back as I cried. “Zack has a lot to answer for and when I catch up with him, he’s going to feel the full force of my anger. How dare he hurt you this way.”

I lifted my head and brushed at my tears. “Thank you for caring but he’s not worth it. Why aren't you at the office?”

“It's after six in the evening.”

“Oh, you should be home with Calvin.”

“Why don't you come home with me? Stay for a few days.”

“Thanks, but I need to be alone.”

“I hate leaving you alone while you're so upset.”

“Go, I'll be fine.”

Stacey stood. “I'll go but if you need me, call.”

She let herself out and as soon as she was gone, I curled up on the lounge and resumed wallowing.

Chapter Thirteen

Neil

I brought my car to a halt next to Zack's. Lance and I jumped out and stomped to the front door of the cabin. I banged once, hard.
