A smile that I’m sure was gone when he got up in the morning.

My shaking finger traces his lips gently, wishing his warmth was right beside me.

But I put it down and then put the car in drive. Fifteen minutes later, I’m pulling up in front of the building and scrambling out of the car, hoping that my stomach stays where it’s supposed to. For the last week, everything seems to set it off.

I walk in the building and asked for the detectives that I’ve been talking to.

I’m led back and two detectives eye me cynically. Both of them have hard eyes and firmed lips like they can’t be bothered to smile. I don’t either.

“I have what you needed. I got ahold of the FBI too. They’ve been looking into it. We’ve found a ton of evidence of embezzlement. But it’s not my parents. It’s Carter Dubois. He’s been taking money every month for years.”

Both of them nod while they look over the files. One looks up, his harsh eyes wavering slightly when I gulp and breathe through my nose. There’s that sick, upended feeling in my belly again.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” I whisper, wishing it was true.

“We’ll give this to the boss and see what we can do. It looks pretty clear-cut. Do you need a ride home?”

The older man studies me, a frown between his brows.

“No. I’m good.” I stand up, proud of myself that I wasn’t shaking as badly as I felt I should.

But… then everything goes dark and one of them yelps, catching me before my head hits the floor.

And that’s all I remember. Blessed, peaceful dark.

“How are we doing today? Feeling any better?”

My gritty eyes open and I groan, the light hurting my burning eyes. “Oh god!”

The doctor quickly closes the blinds and says gently, “Better?”

I nod my head but close my eyes, breathing through my nose.

“I think you’re gonna have this for awhile but with any luck by the second trimester the nausea will get better.”

My eyes fly open and I stare at him like he’s just spoken in a different language.

“What?”

“Well, sometimes the first few months of pregnancy causes a lot of nausea. Then the second trimester kinda straightens around. We’ll keep an eye on things but with any luck, you’ll have that. I’ve put through a prescription for some prenatal vitamins and we’ve got a doctor that we’re gonna suggest but of course you can pick whoever you want.”

“Doctor?”

“Obstetrician. It’s up to you but we’ve got a few good ones that would take good care of you and your baby.”

“Baby?” My breath huffs out wildly and I feel spots in front of my eyes.

“Shit!” He carefully lays me back. “Close your eyes and breathe deep. Just relax. I thought you knew.”

“I’m pregnant?” Tears coast down my cheeks and I rub my hands over my cheeks, a smile tilting my lips.

“Yes. Only a few weeks I think. Since you passed out, we went ahead and did a blood test and lo and behold, there it was.”

“I’m having a baby?”
