“Oh, so you’re immortal?”Ijoke.

Helooks at me with a serious expression. “Yes,Iam.”

Ilaugh, but when his expression doesn’t falter, my smile fades.Ishe being serious?Ican’t really get a good read on him.Heis very mercurial.

“Youwish,”Iretort and eat more of my food.

Hesets his sandwich down, wipes his hands, and stretches his arm across the back of the seat.Thefingers on his other hand tap on the table.

EVANDER

“Notanymore,”Itell him.I’mpushing for some shock value, just to see how he will react, butI’malso hoping he’ll open up to me. “TheolderIget, the more tired my brain becomes.Foreverisn’t as enticing as it used to be.”

Heraises an eyebrow but smiles as he eats. “Youtalk like you’re an old man.”

“Olderthan you.”

Herolls his dark blue eyes at me. “Don’tremind me.I’mso over being categorized as too young.”

“Tooyoung for what?”

“Youask a lot of questions.”Heshakes his head, reminding me he doesn’t want to talk about whatever is on his mind.WhenItouched him earlier,Iwas met with a myriad of feelings and a couple of names,LukeandRachel, whomIknow maybe more thanIshould.Hehas secrets, and they seem to be plaguing him.Thereseems to have been a lot more going on in that house than a drunken visit fromRachel’sfather.I’mnot sureIcan get away with touching him again to find out more.

“Andyou don’t seem to want to answer them.”

Damn, he is interesting.Yes, he’s young, but his soul feels old and weary, not unlike my own.Ican’t help but wonder what fate has in mind.Ihave no doubt he needs something from me, otherwise our paths wouldn’t have crossed again.Itis just not clear if he will open up enough for me to help him.

“Isuppose you see a lot of tragic things being anEMT,” he says, changing the subject.That’sokay.Wecan talk about me if it makes him feel more comfortable.

Ipush my plate away, too preoccupied to eat. “Andsome miraculous things.”

“Likewhat?”

“Likethe birth of a child.Someonecoming back to life after flatlining.Hope.Love.IfIonly focused on the bad, thenIcouldn’t do the job.”

Thisseems to give him pause. “Ilike that.Lookingfor the positive.”

“Ihave to for my own sanity.”Icause enough tragic destruction beingPhayed. It’sinspiring the way humans with such a short lifespan can have so much love and hope.

“Youmarried?” he asks.

Ihold up my left hand and wiggle my fingers.Ihave rings on almost every finger except that one. “Nope, and never have been.Whatabout you?Leavinga girl behind inAlta?”Iwait, but he ignores my question and takes a bite of his burger.Interestingthat he doesn’t answer my question. “Aguy maybe?”

Hecuts his eyes to me, but it’s not because he seems offended.I’vehit a nerve.Thatis the threadIneed to pull.Ihold up my hands in compliance. “Notjudging.I’mjust curious about you.”

“Why?”

“Becausefate has brought us together.Theremust be a reason.”

“Andme telling you about my sex life is the reason.”

Iblow out a breath and rub my hands over my thighs. “Soresubject then.Forthe record,Iwasn’t asking about your sex life.”

Hepushes his plate toward the edge of the table and holds my stare.Fuck,IwishIcould touch him, but his hands are beneath the table.Whateveris going through his mind, he feels very strongly about it.

Thewaitress places a slice of apple pie with ice cream in front ofEvan.Sheleaves, but neither of us looks away.Shereturns with a pitcher of tea and refills my cup.Iwink at her and smile. “Thankyou.”
