Page 42 of My First Kiss

Luke starts shaking his head and backing away, but Piper grabs his arm and holds tight before he can make an escape. Her eyes are alight with purpose.

“That’s a great idea!”

“It sounds like a terrible idea to me,” Luke grumbles. But he doesn’t move to leave. Instead, he lowers himself to sit on the arm of the couch next to Piper.

“Let’s hear it,” he says with a sigh.

Piper smiles up at him before turning to me. “Tell him what Linc said. All of it.”

I repeat the story for Luke, telling him all the things Linc remembered about me.

“So, what do you think?” Piper asks. “Is that a weird coincidence? Or is it something else?”

Luke rubs the back of his neck, not meeting either of our gazes.

“Well?” I ask. “What does it mean?”

He finally sighs. “I can’t speak for Linc,” he says. “But as a guy, I can honestly say that we don’t typically memorize someone’s favorite things unless that someone is important to us.” He looks at me. “Why don’t you just ask him?”

I roll my eyes as Piper shakes her head. “She can’t just ask him.”

Luke throws his hands up. “Why the hell not? Be direct. Guys like direct.”

“Like you were so direct with me?” Piper mutters.

Luke grins down at her. “Oh, you were direct with me, though. Remember?”

The low, teasing tone in his voice makes me feel like I’m intruding on their private moment.

“I remember,” Piper says, pulling him down for a kiss.

I wait patiently for them to finish before pointedly clearing my throat. “Back to my problem, please?”

Luke smiles over at me. “Sorry,” he says, looking smug rather than apologetic.

“No, you aren’t,” I tease.

He grins. “I’m really not.”

Piper rolls her eyes at him, but she’s smiling too. “Let’s focus on Harlow and Linc, please.”

“Right,” Luke nods. “I still think the best option is to ask him about it. But I can understand why you don’t want to.” He gives me a thoughtful look. “I do have a question, though.”

“Okay.”

“Why does it matter?”

I shrug, my gaze going to the glass in my hands. “I’m just curious. That’s all.”

“Bullshit.”

“Luke!” Piper protests.

He shrugs. “Tell me why it matters so much so I can give adequate advice. From the male perspective.”

I look at Piper who gives a little shrug as if to say, ‘It’s your call.’

“I didn’t tell him anything,” she says.
