“JesusChrist,” my father-in-law croaks. “Does he need to have his balance checked? His inner ear, maybe?”

“Nope,” Tuck lightly chuckles. “He’s just an adorable, clumsy little critter.”

My own giggles enter the conversation. “Like his mom.”

“And one that’s not afraid of getting hurt on an adventure.”

“Like his dad.”

Our eyes meet for a brief, sweet moment that my husband follows with a wide grin. “He’s a fun mix of us both, which is why I bet…” Tucker turns his attention back to Lo who seems to be investigating something in the distance, “he fell out of the booth trying to see or overhear something.” Lo instantly meets his gaze. “Which was it, Little Critter?”

“She had penguin socks, Dad!”

An all-knowing smirk slips onto his face.

“Can we make a penguin disappear?!”

“How about we start by making thisbumpdisappear,” I gingerly brush my index finger across it, “along with your sticky spots while Dad reassures Pop Pop that everything’s fine and not his fault?”

“Itismy fault,” Rich emotionally objects. “I should’ve watched him closer.”

“Still would’ve fell.” My swift statement is spoken as I head for the freezer for the icepack, I knew we’d need during our travels. “Gravity is moody.”

“Gravity isconsistent,” Tuck chuckles on a headshake. “Balanceis not.”

MotherofMonaLisa, how accidentally cryptic does that shit sound?

Why does it feel like by adding one more to our mixwe’llsuddenly be imbalanced?

Unable to function?

And if that’s the case – which it very well may be – how long will that go on for?

A few days?

Weeks?

Months?

Longer?

You know what…

It doesn’t matter.

Having another baby is going to temporarily tilt our canvas off its easel one way or another, but we’ll inevitably find harmony again like we always have.

I mean…won’t we?

Chapter 2

June

“What are we doin’, dad?!” Lo enthusiastically investigates from my side. “Does it have to do with magic?!”

“No.”

“Magicians?!”
