He turned me around to face him, serious as he pinched my chin so I could look nowhere but at him. “It’s… not in you not to give your all to something. Maybe your grandma just raised you right or maybe it was always there. I think part of you being a submissive is your desire to give to others, to help them, to do everything you could to make other people happy. Baby, I don’t need that from you. I love it about you, sure, but you don’t have to serve me to make me happy.” He dropped his hand and added, “If you ever want to stop all this, just say the word. You’re my equal around here, whether or not you are my sub. You got that?”

“Yeah. It’s not making me want to stop it any, though. It makes me want to work harder.”

“Stubborn ass.”

The day was lazy, and we knew we’d be working hard for a few days. Well, harder than usual, so we didn’t get into any ambitious scenes, just a little training of me following him, of me learning how he wanted me to stand, to kneel.

We got up each morning, worked like crazy until early evening, and the cattle and horses alike were all fine. Noah seemed to be tense first thing in the morning, but the moment he did his duties, he came back to the house relaxed.

Richard Chase called that week, the day before we were going to be hosting my friends, Burke and Damon. I set the phone on speaker and listened, Noah holding my hand through it.

“That piece of shit, excuse the language, his attorneys tried everything short of bribing me to give up on you and try to see his point of things. He wanted to take you all the way to court, knowing you didn’t have a dime to your name, to take you for everything you’d ever have in life. The guy was out for blood.”

My heart was hammering my chest. “I knew it.”

“Now, don’t give up on me yet. I stuck to my guns, and I not only told them I was going after half of everything he already had, but I was going to petition for palimony. Ten grand a month for life, being you had no intention of marrying again.”

“We weren’t married.”

“That contract, my man, was the key. I convinced them you had a copy, and it stated plainly you were not to work outside the home, and that everything would be provided for you, including meals.”

Noah laughed heartily. “Chase, I may just make you a friend after this.”

“I won’t hold my breath,” he answered cheerily. “Anyway, the case is closed. They pulled out for fear of your ex paying palimony. He… asked for one thing, though.”

“I gave the watch to the sheriff. I told you!”

“No, he’s gotten that back already. He wants to meet with you. He wants a face to face to ask why you left.”

I sat up straight, shaking all over. “No!”

Noah agreed with me. “Not a fucking chance, Chase.”

“That’s what I said would be your reaction, but I told you both if there was something I couldn’t negotiate on my own, I’d tell you. I don’t know, just thought maybe Eli would want to tell that fucker off once and for all.”

“I don’t want to see him. I don’t, ever.”

Noah was behind me, holding me. “You did your job, Chase. Tell him no and we’re all square. And… Richard… thanks.”

“Believe this or don’t, Noah, but it really was a pleasure to do this for you. You take care of each other.”

Noah held me through my shakes, and then tears fell and I worried about how Noah would take them, but he told me before I could get the words out. “When Dale passed, I cried for him and the life we were supposed to have. Then I realized a lot of those tears were from relief, and I beat myself up about it for a long time.”

“It can’t really be over,” I said, in complete disbelief.

“It is. Now, no one will ever hurt you again. Well, except me when I’m feelin’ frisky.”

I laughed through my strange tears. “Fuck! We need to celebrate.”

“Well, I have a few ideas.”

We went to bed and fucked for two hours. I was all over that bed, and he slapped my ass and even lightly choked me while he plowed into me over and over until all the thoughts were gone. Nothing was left except him and being surrounded by the scent of heavy sex and sweat.

We made a late dinner of steaks and roasted peppers, and lay on the couch, trying to read, but we both fell to sleep covered in one of those soft blankets. I got up in the morning and hurried through my chores so I could go insane on the house. I dusted and swept, mopped up all the muddy boot prints, and made sure the kitchen was immaculate.

Noah came in, shaking his head at me. “Settle down before I get you in that cage, and you know it’s cold out in the barn.”

“I want the place to be perfect. Not that it’s ever dirty.”
