Well, he wasn’t wrong. I could be a monster.

I followed him into the house and found him in the kitchen, standing before the open refrigerator. “You didn’t get anything to eat.”

“What are you talking about? I got five hundred dollars worth of food.”

“Nothing…made.”

After moving him from the fridge, I took out the fish in the butcher’s paper and a few vegetables I’d bought. Once it was unwrapped, however, Theo’s nose scrunched cutely. “Fish?”

“No fish, huh?”

“Never cared for it.”

“Not a problem,” I said, then searched the fridge until I found the hamburger. “Burgers?”

“I guess,” he sighed pitifully before leaving the room. “Call me when they’re ready.”

As I grabbed the back of his silk shirt, he squeaked, but he wasn’t going anywhere. “Come back here.”

“Unhand me! That’s assault! I could have you thrown in prison or killed!”

I chuckled darkly. “I thought I was getting killed for throwing you in the pig pen.”

I regretted my words again, seeing those stormy eyes cloud darker before he ducked his head. “I need you for protection, for now. After that, I’m sure you’ll be killed.”

To take his mind off it, I unwrapped the hamburger and nodded him over to it. “We will make dinner together, okay?”

“Ew,” he complained. “I don’t cook,” he said in that same disconnected voice I’d heard earlier.

As bored as he seemed, he only pushed me to keep him busy. “I’m no gourmet, but I can teach you some things.”

“And if I say I don’t want to?”

“You can starve.”

“Neanderthal,” he mumbled. “Fine. What do I do?”

“Find a clean bowl, and we’ll mix some spices into the meat.”

With the tips of his fingers, Theo started to open cabinets, then when he found the bowls, he pointed. “Ew. There.”

“Can you maybe hand me the thing?”

“What if…it’s dirty?”

How anyone lived that kind of life, I’d never understand. “Wash it.”

He managed to get the bowl and brought it up to his face, examining it, and he must have found it acceptable as he handed it to me.

“I’m cutting vegetables. Get the meat in it.”

“Ewww!Touch raw meat? Are you insane?”

He was incensed, and it made me laugh. “Some would say so, but being a bodyguard helps.”

“No one I know touches raw meat. I can’t. I’ll literally vomit.”

I gave him a small break as he backed away from the bowl. “Come over here then and cut these tomatoes.”
