I got a laugh from him as I set the tray over his lap. “Well, true. But…what about the rest of this? How does this even work?”

“Any way that we decide, Theo. It’s up to us to put up boundaries and limitations, to figure out our roles to one another.”

“Don’t you know?” He took a bite of the bacon and then a loud slurp of coffee, and I was captivated watching him.

So captivated I almost missed the question. When it hit me, I realized I knew. “Sure. I want us to be…us. I don’t want to completely change you, Theo. I like the person you are, with…a few exceptions.”

“My forward way of stating things.”

“Yeah, if that’s what you call it.”

I took a piece of his bacon and chewed while he watched me.

“You know,” he started slyly. “From the moment I saw you, I thought you were sexy.”

“Oh?”

“Yes. I hit on you, remember?”

“You told me to suck your dick. Along with half the other men at the club.”

His eyes sparkled. “And you didn’t. You saw me throwing money around but didn’t drop to your knees. I think that was the first time I knew I liked you.”

The confession came out of nowhere. It warmed my chest, and I felt a little closer to Theo. Strange, but true. “I saw you that night, covered in gorgeous go-go dancers, having, what looked like, to the outside world, you were having lots of fun, but you never really smiled. As much as you enjoyed yourself sexually, you didn’t have a real smile. I think that’s the moment I knew I liked you.”

“Why?”

“Because there was more to you than that. Theo, I told you, I see you. I saw you that night.”

He drank a little more coffee, but his lashes fluttered as he stole glances at me.

“Trying to figure out if I’m lying?”

“Yes,” he said quickly. “I…am going to have a tough time believing in this. I’m sorry, but that’s the truth.”

“I appreciate your honesty. In fact, it’s the one thing I insist on.”

“One thing? Seems to me you insist on a lot.”

The old snark was back, and I found that I’d missed it. Still, I had to curb it a little. “Yeah. I will insist on a lot throughout our relationship if we care to venture one. Do we?”

“I already said I did! If I must keep confirming it, it’ll be tedious!”

I took the tray off Theo’s lap, set it back on the desk, then moved over him slowly. He stood up, challenging me, then said, “So here it is, the real you.”

I grabbed his throat, held him to the headboard, and squeezed just enough to prove my point. He grabbed my wrist, trying to pull my hand away, but I was unmoving. “Yes, Theo, this is the real me. Stop yelling at me; stop treating me like I am some servant because I’m not. I’ll no longer work for you very soon. Soon, I’ll be your partner and only your partner. Got it?”

He’d stopped struggling when I spoke, but his eyes had narrowed at me viciously. “Got it.”

“Are you going to behave?”

“Behave? Am I a child?”

I grinned at him. “You’re my boy. You’re not a child, but you’ll be treated like you act. Act like a spoiled brat; that’s how you’ll be treated.”

When I let go of his throat, he stared at me, lips parting, hands in his lap. I didn’t know if I’d hurt him or why he wasn’t moving or speaking, but then he surprised me, moving from under the covers and crawling onto my lap to straddle my legs.

“None of this is easy for me, but you’re worth it, Hud. I swear it; I’ll try. For you.”
