“Yeah. We need to. I doubt anything is going to be done that hurts you. What you need to worry about is getting this house from them. I have some savings, but nothing that would make a dent in three million.”

“I have enough.”

He said that with such confidence it got me wondering exactly how much money he had, but I wouldn’t dare ask and make him again think I was after it. Besides, I didn’t care. It was his and had nothing to do with me.

We made a whirlwind shopping trip, and the credit card was hot every time it was back in my wallet. We bought living room and bedroom furniture from the store in town. Theo found a super king-size bed, so I’d be comfortable. That was the sweetest part of the day. He even made me lay on it to ensure I fit perfectly, and I did.

Then we went back to the hardware store two towns over, getting set for remodeling the other two bathrooms. Theo also picked out new cabinet pulls, then dragged me to a kitchen store for new plates, glasses, and everything else he thought we’d need to live well.

We were exhausted when driving home, but he was happier than I’d seen him. “I will do it all, well, except the manual labor. Do you think Tale and Decker know how to install knobs and such?”

“Tucker and Dale, Theo, and I don’t know. We can ask and pay them extra to do the extra work, but remember, they’re also taking the orders and slaughtering soon, smoking and curing the meat. They’re going to be busy.”

“Oh, right. I have fifteen orders in the city already.”

“You do? That’s great, Theo.”

“People like that the pork is raised nicely in the country. Maybe we should build them bigger pens.”

“Maybe we should.”

As happy as the day had made him, and how flirtatious he was on the ride home, running his hand over my thigh, right up to my dick until I barked at him to stop several times, threatening a spanking, it didn’t continue. We arrived home to see a car parked in the driveway and dark figures on the porch. I had gotten no alerts on my phone from the cameras, so I parked up the drive and took out my phone while Theo shook in the passenger seat.

“Who is that, Hud?”

“I don’t know,” I said, seeing the front cameras were off. “Someone fucked with my cameras.”

“Hud! Hud, they’re here to kill me!”

I threw the car in reverse and backed away, but my phone rang. I grabbed it with one hand while getting the vehicle spun around and saw it was Javi.

I answered immediately, ready to tell him someone had jumped the gun, but he said, “Hud, Hud, it’s us. It’s us; we’re here. Danny disabled the cameras. It used to be his thing, security systems.”

“What are you doing here?” I demanded, worried that Theo had been right and the negotiation was that Theo had to be killed after all. “I’m not bringing him back to be hurt, Javi.”

“No, man, no! We worked it out. He’s fine, I swear to God. I swear, man, no shit, it’s not bad! I just have to do a favor for someone, and it’s gotta include you all. Get back here.”

“If one person steps to hurt him, I’ll defend him. Just fucking know that.”

“Good to hear, ese, good to hear.”

I stopped the car and saw Theo so pale he glowed beside me. “Babe, that was Javi. It’s them. He said you’re safe. I will call Burke, though, and have him come get you. I want to see what the fuck this is about first.”

“No.”

The phone was in my hand, Burke’s number a push away, but he took my phone from me. “If they are after me, Burke won’t save me. I’m not letting you go alone.”

I grabbed his head and brought him to me so I could kiss him. I pushed our mouths roughly together and held him, suddenly so fearful of losing him that I didn’t know what to do. “Theo, if anything happened to you…”

“It won’t. I won’t allow it.”

I smiled at his attempt at confidence, though it would have worked better if he wasn’t shaking. “I’m…glad. Still, stay in the car until I see what’s going on. Deal?”

“Fine.”

I drove to the house and parked so Theo’s side of the car faced the road and not the place. When I got out, one of the figures started down the porch stairs, and I reached for my weapon, the sidearm I carried on my hip.

“Whoa, ese, I told you, it’s me.”
