“Are you happy for us?”

“I thought you just needed the capos off your back?”

“Things got serious,” I say on a shrug.

“It takes weeks to arrange a marriage, Anton.” He picks his drink up again and takes a mouthful. “And you never mentioned it. I thought we were closer than that.” He gives me a bitter stare.

“I know you don’t understand, but trust me—”

“Trust you?” he spits. “You’ve kept me out of the loop, Anton. You think the families will believe in this marriage when I wasn’t even there?”

“It’s done,” I say firmly. “Piper is my wife, and I’d appreciate your support.”

He shakes his head sadly. “What choice do I have?”

“Tag, we’re leaving,” yells Lucy from the hall.

He smirks, placing his empty glass on the table. I follow him into the hall, where Lucy is waiting with Piper wrapped in her arms like a broken bird. I frown, stepping in front of them to block their path. “You’re not leaving,” I say, bending slightly to catch Piper’s eye.

“Try and stop us, I dare you,” snaps Lucy, trying to walk around me. I move again, stopping them.

“Don’t forget how we got to this,” I add, ignoring Lucy.

Piper looks up at me through her lashes, “I need a break,” she whispers.

“You don’t have to explain anything to him,” Lucy snaps.

I glare at Tag, silently telling him to get his woman in check. He groans, rolling his eyes. “Luce,” he mutters, “it’s between them.”

“Don’t you dare stick up for him,” she growls. “She’s so upset, she can’t even tell me what’s wrong.” I feel slight relief she hasn’t told Lucy the truth.

I gently rub a thumb over Piper’s cheek, and she allows it, keeping her eyes downcast. “One night,” I whisper, “so you can process.”

She nods once, and I step to the side so they can pass. Tag hits me on the shoulder, slightly harder than expected, and I glare at him. He smirks. “I’ll see you in the gym in,” he glances at his watch, “four hours. You deserve what’s coming.”

I roll my eyes. “We’ll see about that.”

I hardly sleep, catching maybe two hours before I’m up and showered. I catch up on some work in the office, and when I hear Ella come down for breakfast, I join her. She’s been ignoring me since the wedding, so she doesn’t look best pleased when I sit at the table.

“Where’s Piper?” she asks, her voice cold.

“She spent the night at Tag and Lucy’s.”

Ella arches her brow. “She’s sick of your arse already? It doesn’t surprise me.”

“Go and get ready for work. I’m leaving for the gym shortly.”

“I can make my own way,” she mutters.

“Now, Ella,” I snap.

I’m already warmed up when Tag arrives. “Is Piper okay?” I ask.

“No. She went to bed upset and woke angry as hell. I’d hate to be you right now,” he says, smirking as he throws his gym bag down by the ring.

“Did she tell Lucy that we’re married?”

Tag shakes his head. “And I’m denying all knowledge because when she finds out everything, she’s going to explode.”
