“Mia amata,” I whisper, and she stills. I take the corner of the tape. “Take a deep breath,” I instruct, and she does, then I rip the tape from her mouth. She growls angrily, her hands immediately covering the area.

“Motherfucker,” she cries, spinning to Tag. “You piece of shit,” she screams. “What the fuck are you playing at?”

“My boss requested I return you to him,” says Tag with a shrug. “Just doing my job.”

“Let’s see if Lucy understands,” she snaps.

I try to rub her shoulders, but she shrugs me off. “Keep your hands off me,” she spits. “Don’t ever touch me again.”

“That’s gonna be hard now we’re married,” I point out.

“Fuck you, Anton,” she growls. “You’re not my husband and you never will be.” She heads for the stairs, running up them and slamming the bedroom door.

Tag laughs. “Something tells me this is going to be one of the biggest mistakes you ever made.”

“She’ll come around.”

He laughs harder. “You reckon? Yah know, if you’d have come to me in the first place to discuss this ridiculous plan, I’d have talked you out of it. Maybe that’s the reason you didn’t include me. But Piper is not the sort of girl you can bend to your will.”

“Don’t talk like you know her better than me,” I snap.

“You’ve spent a few weeks with her, Anton. You’re no expert. If you were, you wouldn’t have done this. And when Hulk finds out,” he shakes his head, “you’re gonna wish you’d talked to me first.”

I sigh heavily. “Look, I can tell you everything, but you have to think like my underboss and not like Hulk’s brother-in-law or Lucy’s husband.”

His expression turns serious. “It’s an insult you’re even saying that to me.”

“You’d better come and take a seat,” I mutter, heading for my office.

Chapter Fourteen

PIPER

A loud knock on the door makes me jump. “Unlock the door, Piper, and join us for dinner.” I scoff. He’s acting like this is just a petty argument and I’m overreacting. How can he expect me to eat dinner with him and make polite conversation? “Do you realise I have a key for every door in this house?” he asks. “Make the right decision and come out yourself.”

“I need some space. Give me some space,” I yell.

“You can’t stay in there forever. You’ll need to come out and face this eventually.”

I’ve been in this room for nine hours, and I don’t plan on leaving while Anton is out there waiting to talk to me.

My mobile phone lets out a shrill ring and I see it’s Mae calling me. I answer, relieved to have someone to talk to. Maybe Anton will stop pestering me.

“Okay, hit me with it,” she says. “Lucy told me you called her in the middle of the night.”

“I would’ve called you, but I thought Ace and Hulk might come with you, and I didn’t need the extra stress. Besides, you have enough going on.”

“Don’t be crazy. I’d always come if you needed me. What was so bad that you called in the middle of the night?”

“Mae, I don’t know where to start. I’ve done something stupid, but—”

She cuts in excitedly. “You had sex with the mob boss, didn’t you?”

I lose my nerve. I’m so embarrassed about the whole thing that I let her think having sex with Anton is my dilemma. “Yeah,” I sigh, “and he treated me like crap after. It reminded me of Hulk.”

“Oh, Pip. I’m sorry it didn’t work out like you hoped. Have you spoken to him?”

“I’m embarrassed,” I admit. “I can’t bring myself to right now.”
