“You okay?” Ella appears beside me, looking down with an amused expression.

“I’m so confused,” I admit. “I’m giving myself a pep talk.”

Ella picks some of the ham from the leftovers and pops it into her mouth. “Tell all.”

“I’m listing all the reasons why I should stay away from your brother,” I explain.

She nods enthusiastically. “Oh, I totally, one hundred percent, agree. He’s bad news.” Her tone is mocking, and I scowl playfully.

I hold a finger up in the air. “Number one, he’s got heartbreaker written all over him.” She nods in agreement. I add a second finger. “Number two, he tricked me into marriage. Who the hell does that?”

“Complete psycho,” says Ella, shrugging.

“Number three,” I add a finger, “he blackmailed me into dating him.”

“Ouch, maybe that’s the red flag that should have sent you running?”

I scowl again. “You’re missing the part where I said blackmailed me.”

“Sorry, right, go on to number four,” she urges, pulling up my fourth finger.

“He’s too bossy. We’d fight all the time because I hate authority.”

“So true. The power of being a Mafia boss has gone to his head,” she teases. “He bosses everyone around like it’s his job.”

“I’m his wife, not one of his staff,” I point out.

Ella grins and repeats, “His wife?”

I sit up, and she steps back, laughing. “Technically,” I say, shrugging. “At least I am on paper.”

“All of your reasons so far are spot-on,” she tells me, taking the leftovers to the table and sitting down as she continues to eat.

“What else?” I ask, letting my feet dangle over the edge of the countertop. “Give me more.”

She tips her head to the side, thinking for a second. “Don’t forget the nice houses he owns,” waving her finger at me. “Complete rich bastard, so annoying.”

I pout. “You’re supposed to be helping.”

She laughs. “Okay, he has a crazy mother who he sent away. He might have her genes and turn mad himself. You don’t want to have to deal with that.”

“Your mum is sick. Mental illness does not equal crazy,” I say pointedly. “He has serious mood swings. I never know where I stand with him.” I add the fifth finger.

“He owns a lot of businesses, so he’ll never be home,” says Ella. “You’ll probably spend more time with his annoying sister than him.”

“That sounds terrible,” I joke.

“And he has no experience with women.” She frowns. “Actually, he does. What I mean to say is he has no relationship experience, so the chances are, he’ll screw it up all the time.”

“There’s been a lot of women?” I ask, jumping down and joining her at the table.

“Exactly. That’s reason number six—he’s had more women than hot dinners.”

I smirk. “Explains a lot.”

Ella screws her face up. “Gross.”

“What would you say to me if I was your best friend and he wasn’t your brother?” I ask.
