“Matteo,” says Lorenzo, almost in a whisper.

Tag ignores him and looks straight to me. “You didn’t think I’d want to see this?” he asks, shaking my hand.

“He’s your father,” I sigh, “I didn’t want to put you in that position.” Tag steps closer to Lorenzo. There’s something different about the look in his eyes, and I can see why people fear Matteo Corallo . . . in and out of the cage.

“He tried to have me killed, and then he planned to take my wife,” he spits. “I’ve waited a long time to see him suffer.”

“It’s our way of life, Matteo. It wasn’t personal,” his father says firmly.

“Are you serious? I’m your fucking son! It doesn’t get more personal than that. I tried to help you. I lied to Conner to keep your waste of space arse alive!”

We lied to my father after Lorenzo crossed the mob. It seems so long ago now, so much has happened.

“Do it, kill me. You’ll spend the rest of your days and nights remembering this moment,” Lorenzo growls, pulling hard on the ropes holding him to the chair. Tag punches him. It’s fast and unexpected, but Lorenzo smirks. His lip splits and crimson fluid drips down his chin. “You still hit like an untrained, feral pussy,” he spits.

“Full of encouragement,” Tag scoffs. “You were always so positive,” he adds, wiping his fist.

“You were nothing before I put you in that cage,” Lorenzo yells.

“I was a fucking kid. You didn’t want a son, you wanted a killing machine.”

“And you failed at that. You’re gonna let that biker piece of shit slit my throat? The Mafia affiliated with biker scum . . .” He spits on the ground angrily. “Conner would turn in his grave.”

“Conner was a piece of shit, just like you. We’ve never been so well off. The power we have is more than you could ever have dreamed of,” shouts Tag.

“Ella was always a whore. Even as a child, she’d use those big eyes to get what she wanted. Can you blame a man going there?”

I step forward, a growl leaving my throat at the callous mention of Ella’s sexual abuse. Tag stops me by placing his hands to my chest. “Don’t. He wants you to kill him quick. Stick to the plan.”

Ace steps forward. “I told you I’d kill you,” he says. “The most satisfying thing,” he continues, pulling out his blade slowly, “is that now I know just how you feel about bikers, it makes it all the sweeter.”

“Fuck you. Your bitch was worth it. That tight pussy begged to feel a real man.”

Ace stabs the blade into Lorenzo’s hand. He can’t move it away because it’s bound to the arm of the chair. He grits his teeth but doesn’t make a sound. “I love the feel of flesh breaking,” Ace murmurs, satisfaction written across his face.

“We should leave you to it,” I say. “The smell is making me want to join in.”

As we leave the room, the sound of Ace’s exerted breaths and the slashing of flesh follow us.

I inhale fresh, clean air into my lungs as soon as we step outside. Relief floods me. We finally have the fucker. Now that he’s gone, the families can relax. Michael goes inside to make some calls to the capos as Tag pats me on the shoulder. “There’s a party tonight at the club. Why don’t you come?”

“What’s the party for?” I ask.

“Not sure. Those fuckers throw a party for anything. Look, I’d like to have a drink with you. Things have been weird lately. Now Lorenzo’s gone, we should celebrate. Besides, your wife will be there, and if you leave her to Hulk, well . . .” he trails off. I glance over at Hulk, who’s waiting by his bike. Tag’s right. I haven’t seen Piper for three days. It’s time.

Chapter Fifteen

PIPER

I’d convinced myself that a party was exactly what I needed this evening. But since the guys returned, bringing Tag and Anton along with them, I feel less in the party spirit.

Mae is angry with Ace for taking Mystique along for the ride on Lorenzo’s killing. And despite the fact she’s ignoring him, he’s got her pinned to his side, refusing to let her move anywhere without him.

Anton hasn’t made a move to speak to me, and I’m not sure if that pisses me off even more. Since he dropped me here, he’s not called or texted, and I should be pleased, but deep down, I’m not. That just confuses me more.

I down another shot, miserably wondering what my life’s become.

Ace climbs up on the bar. “Thanks for coming,” he begins, and the chatter in the bar dies down. “You’re probably all wondering why I called you here. After the last few weeks, things have been tense, and I thought we could all do with some good news.” He jumps down from the bar and stands next to Mae, who looks completely baffled by his speech. “I’m not getting any younger, so I thought it was about time I took claim to a fantastic, amazing woman.”
