“I should go,” I say, pushing to stand.

“Piper,” he begins.

“I just . . .” I pause to take a breath. “I just need time.”

He nods. “So you keep saying.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing,” he mutters, going back to his laptop. “I’ll have Michael take you home.”

“Don’t bother,” I say, heading for the exit.

He stands and follows. “I don’t want you walking the streets with no protection.”

“I’m going to the clubhouse,” I tell him, and he grabs my wrist to halt me.

“Why?”

I scowl, pulling free. “To speak to Ace. To make things right with everyone.”

“Including Hulk?”

“Everyone,” I repeat, pulling free. “Don’t you trust me?”

“I don’t trust him.”

I roll my eyes and continue out the door with him following. “Can I see you later?” he asks.

“I don’t know. I’ll see how today goes.”

I get to the clubhouse, and Lucy is by the door. She screams with delight when she sees me, wrapping me in her arms. “What a nice surprise.”

“I came to see Ace, straighten things out. Then I need to see my parents.”

“Are you going to tell them the truth?” she asks, her eyes wide.

I shake my head. “Part truths.”

Ace is behind his desk. He doesn’t smile when I knock to enter but points to the chair opposite his desk. I slide into it like a naughty child. “Does Hulk know you’re here?” I shake my head. “I should tell him.”

“I came to see you,” I say. “To ask if I can see my parents.”

He frowns. “I’d never stop you seeing Bear or Queenie.”

“You asked me to leave. I wasn’t sure how deep that ran.”

“I was angry because Hulk was upset. The best thing at the time was for you to leave. I’ve talked to Anton. We’re straightening shit out.”

“He told me Hulk will be working for him.”

Ace almost smiles. “Yeah. The news didn’t go down well.”

“I imagine it didn’t. Look, I don’t know about your deals with Anton. I just came to say I’m sorry for the pain I caused. I never meant to upset anyone.”

“And I’m sorry I had to ask you to leave. I never meant for that to be permanent. You’re as much a part of this club as anyone. You belong here.”

“I think we both know I’m outgrowing this place,” I say, unable to hide the sadness in my voice. “Too much has happened between me and Hulk.”
