The one place I’ve always belonged is with her. She’s my home. And wherever she goes, that’s where I go too. For the rest of our lives, we’ll work and play and love.

And that’s the way it always should have been.

Epilogue: Candy

“How on earth do you guys always manage to make such a mess?” I stand in the doorway and eye my two year old twins. Ronna and Randy are a handful and they seem to egg each other on, somehow splitting all the destruction to make it even more than you’d think that a houseful of kids could do.

Ronna giggles and Randy just stares at me with that intimidating look that is all me. Ronna has the same charming grin that her daddy has and it’s real damn hard to stay mad at her.

I sigh and pick one of them up and then lean down for the other one, groaning when I stand up. They’re getting to be quite the heavy load.

Then I carry the two of them upstairs and into their bathroom. I set both of them down and strip them, laughing when they giggle at me. “You two are too much trouble.”

Then I run the bathwater, bubbles bouncing up into springy clusters that they try and smash with their little fists.

When I have everything ready, I sit them both in the tub in their little bath seats and laugh when they immediately start bopping at each other with their toys.

“Alright, alright. That’s enough of that. I don’t want to have to make another trip to the emergency room because you two manage to fall over and hit your head. Settle down.”

Ronna sticks her fist in her mouth and drools all over it, making me grimace. “Ugh. No eating your own fist.”

I pull it loose and immediately plunge her dripping hand into the water. Then I blow some bubbles from the little wand in the bathroom while the kids happily gurgle at each other.

“Where are you, baby?”

“Up here!” I holler.

I hear his feet stomping up the stairs and lean over to whisper that there’s a monster coming up the stairs to the kids.

Their eyes widen and they still, their eyes on the door until it gradually opens and there’s Garret smiling.

“Daddy, daddy!” Both of them scream and kick their feet in the air, water flying all over me.

I blow the bubbles out of my mouth and push my hair out of my eyes. “Well, that didn’t go like I planned.” I smile at Garrett and he leans over to kiss me.

“Why don’t you let me finish up in here and you go get changed. Dry your hair.”

“Thank you, honey. I would appreciate it.”

“We got this!” He grins at the kids and then high-fives them both which is their new daddy trick. Both of them love it.

Half an hour later, I hear him opening the bedroom door where I sit in the bathroom, pulling my long hair into a neat braid for bed. He walks in and leans on the door.

“Lord, you’re too pretty to be real sometimes.”

Flushing, I stand up and sway over to him. “I’m real and I’m right here. Why don’t you show me how much you missed me today?”

He reels me in and wraps his big arms around me, smiling down into my eyes. “I cannot wait to do that, Mrs. Christopher. I hope that you took a nap today because I’m gonna keep you up all night. I missed you.”

“How was the set?”

“Good. Jeremy wasn’t there so I much preferred it.” I choke on my laugh.

“Yeah. Well, I’m glad he found someone else to take his attention.”

“Poor girl,” Garret growls.

“I’ve been alone all this month. I think you should be calling me poor girl.”
