“You better not fuck things up any worse than they already are.”

“I’m not going to. I might actually have an idea how to fix this.”

“Do tell,” he drawls wryly.

“Not yet. Just make sure and let me know when she gets something and I’ll go from there.”

“Okay,” he warns. “Just don’t make me regret this.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Okay. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Bye.”

I hang up and a satisfied smile curls my lips. I need my wife back. Need to fix what went wrong. And I need to come riding to her rescue like some damn knight of old. Because I would do anything for Candy.

She will always be my one true love. No matter what comes between us or how long she stays away. She is mine.

I just have to bring her back to the idea. Should be easy.

Yeah. Not so much.

CHAPTER3

Candace

“Seriously? Nothing? You can’t find me anything? I need to work, Bob.”

“It’s not like you need it to be able to eat. You’ve got plenty of money, Candace.”

“I just need to work.”

“Right now, you’re still persona non grata. If you wait for awhile, then hopefully when this dies down, you’ll be able to find something.”

“Right.” Disappointment and hurt build in me like a constricted hose, searching for some way out. I feel like I’m so close to losing my mind. I need something to do. Need to keep busy or I am going to go crazy worrying that this is it. Just one more opportunity for my father to ruin my life.

The next week goes by and I’m still trying to process everything that’s happened. Still trying to come to terms with the fact that this might be it.

My brother calls me and I can barely talk to him, angry and ashamed of being angry at him. It’s not his fault. I’m the one that insisted on seeing him, making sure that he’s alright. Anything that happened after that is on me.

Finally, after two weeks of hell, wondering if I’d ever hear from anyone except paparazzi again, my phone rings. I leap for it, bored out of my mind and squeal when I see that it’s Bob.

“Bob! Thank heaven! Please tell me that you’ve got something for me. Anything. At this point, I’ll do anything.”

He sighs. “I hope you mean that because I had to work my ass off to get you this. And it’s not something that I think you’ve ever considered doing. But I’ve got an offer from them for a month so I’m going to advise you to take it.”

“What is it? A commercial?”

“No.” He pauses and my heart rate skyrockets. “It’s on Hollywood Squares.”

“A game show? Are you serious? That’s where actors go when they can’t find anything else! Where they go to die!”

“NO!” He moderates his tone. “It’s where they go when they can’t find anything else and they want to get their faces back out there.”

“Going on that show opens me up to so many humiliating questions about my family. I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I’ve got a promise from them that they will not ask you any questions about the mafia, your father or your brother. Strictly professional.”
