CHAPTER5

Candace

Iblow out a deep breath when I hear them call my name and my square lights up, revealing me to the audience. I smile and wave at everyone, ignoring how thin the clapping is. I know I’m going to have to work for it.

The host smiles and welcomes me to the show and I nod and smile, thanking him for having me.

Then, the camera moves away from me and I can take a deep breath. The host laughs at something someone says and I try to quiet my heart.

I knew that it was going to be hard. I knew that I would possibly not have a warm welcome. But I know I’ll work my ass off to get my world back.

“And finally, this actor has been around Hollywood for what feels like forever. He grew up in a household full of famous names and went on to become a huge powerhouse in this industry. We’ve kept his name a secret because we wanted to prolong the surprise. He’s never done anything like this! Give a warm welcome to….Garret Christopher!”

Shock stops my heart, I swear.Nooo.I moan internally. There’s no way. It can’t be.

But I hear loud cheering and his name being chanted over and over again and I realize that the camera is back on me. Right in my face.

I immediately paste a huge smile on my mouth, clearing all thought from my head.

With all my years in Hollywood, I know exactly what to do right now. Fake it till you make it.

“Is everybody ready? Let’s play Hollywood Squares!” The host, Arnie, turns to one of the players. “Alright. Here’s your question. If you wanted to make sure that you get a job, what is the one answer that you should never give?”

All of us sit waiting patiently as he turns to Ms. O. “Alright. Who would you like to ask?”

She smiles and points at me and I groan internally. I don’t know if I’m ready but I sit up straighter.

When Arnie turns to me, I smile. He repeats the question and I grin. “I would never tell them that I have a habit of falling asleep at work and sleepwalking. I once walked down to the set and did an entire scene while I was asleep. No one even thought anything of it. Even though I was snoring and my eyes were closed the entire time!”

The audience roars with laughter and I smile and wave. Even Arnie laughs, although it’s not a huge belly laugh. “Okay. What’s your answer?”

I pretend to think and then I say, “I hate your product and I’ve never used it.”

Ms. O cocks her head. “I think that that’s incorrect.”

Arnie glances at the card and grins. “You’re right.” My square lights up and I laugh and then sigh deeply, happy that I’m off now.

Arnie grins. “Never tell them that you’ve been arrested for stalking.” He cocks his head. “That’s my words of wisdom. You will not get hired.”

My lips twist. Yeah, that seems pretty much a given.

Now, it’s Mr. X’s turn and he immediately calls on Garret who casually mentions something that happened when we were married. I have to work my ass off not to make any kind of response. Not even a flicker of an eyelid.

The game goes on and on and by the time we’re done with the taping for the first day, I’m exhausted. I’ve never smiled so much in my damn life.

And of course, with my luck, who do I run into first? Garret smiles at me and I groan internally.

“Hello, Candy! It’s been awhile.”

“It would have been even longer if you hadn’t shown up here.”

He frowns, shooting me a sad face like a damn puppy.

“I thought you might have gotten over things by now. It’s been quite a few years.”

“It has,” I nod but then I point a finger at his broad chest, trying to ignore the rippling muscles of his body. All of it. I’ve never wanted to tug someone’s shirt off and lick the hell out of him.

Until Garret. And he’s always affected me that way.
