She shoots me an innocent look. “As if I’d try.”

“Right.”

“You’re not gonna get me!”

She shrugs and walks away, shooting me a sparkling look over her shoulder.

“Fuck!” I drop my head into my hands and try to push it away. But she knows damn well I’ve wondered what he’s up to since he showed up in town. Especially since he started pestering me.

“Dammit!”

I grab my car keys and head out the door. “Cancel all my appointments and wipe that damn smirk off your face!” I stalk outside and try to ignore her laughter.

CHAPTER6

Tony

I’ve finally got the go-ahead and I can’t stop smiling. I set up the commercial water pump and get the nozzle pushed over where I’m shooting the water.

Then I turn it on and watch as it starts to drain the swampy area. My heart jumps when it feels like someone’s watching me. I glance around but don’t see anyone.

I take out the map and study it, checking the diary entry that mentions the spot in the land that ties in to the treasure. Whatever that might be.

There is no specific mention of what the treasure might be. Just that it’s important.

My aunt lived in Wildwood for a long time and her relatives were here before her. More than one generation of my family made this place our home. But that’s not what I’m looking for. What I need to know.

My great-aunt was the one that left the diary with the instructions and the story of the woman in the basement.

I study the placement of the x and make sure that I’m heading in the right direction.

Which I am.

I run my fingers through the soil and then shut down the pump to see what I’m working with.

“Now, what were you up to, great aunt?”l

I ask the question like this long-dead woman is going to jump up next to me and read me the riot act but at least help me with the directions to the treasure.

I hear another soft crunch and whip around, searching the woods around me but once again, there’s nothing there.

Huffing, I push my hair back and study it again, holding it up to check for landmarks and things that stand out.

There’s a big rock and a tree that look like they might be on the map. I zero in on those and make my way over to them, studying the tree trunk and tapping on it to see if it’s hollow or something stupid.

Then when nothing seems odd with that, I bend down and kneel by the tree and the rock, running my hand over the ground.

“What the hell are you doing?”l

I grin, not really surprised to hear her voice. My eyes drift up and I’m struck again by how beautiful she is. “What are you doing on my property, firecracker? Looking for me?”

“Nope! Just making sure you’re not doing anything illegal.”

I stand up and stalk over to her, watching her blue eyes widen. “I think that you missed me, babydoll. I think you came looking for me because you missed me.”

“The hell I did!” she snorts.

But it gives me time to catch up with her. Time to lift her up until her nose is level with mine. Not by one iota does she act like she’s scared or intimidated. Her blue eyes widen and it’s like looking into the bright blue sky in the morning. Clear. Stunning.
