Even though we’ve had plenty of sex, I’m always the one to take charge. I only gave in because no matter if he admits it or not, I know he and Beau have something going on, and I’m no homewrecker.

“I’m taking a shower,” I toss over my shoulder as I saunter toward my ensuite.

“Hurry before we miss breakfast.”

???

It’s easy to find a seat at The Cozy Bean Cafe considering we missed the breakfast crowd.

As soon as a waiter appears, I order a double espresso, and she looks expectantly at Caleb, who, of course, offers his flirty smile.

“Morning, May. I’ll have a nice large glass of milk.”

“Coming right up.”

As she saunters away, I watch her big derrière sway back and forth.

“She’s married, you know.”

“Doesn’t mean I can’t look.”

That’s when I noticed a blast from the past. “Psst two o’clock! Doesn’t she look familiar?”

We both blatantly study the tall, leggy brunette who, after a short while, takes notice, and her big, brown eyes widen before a giant smile takes up half her lovely face. But the recognition isn’t there. When she opens her mouth to say something to the waitress I’m inundated with memories as I take in a familiar accent I haven’t heard in decades… Scottish.

I turn to Caleb, who’s busy perusing the menu even though we order the same thing every time we come here.

“You remember that girl Abi from when we were kids?”

He scratches his head, a sure sign he’s concentrating. It doesn’t take long before that lightbulb blinks on.

“Oh yeah. Gosh, how long has it been?” Caleb wonders aloud.

I press my hands to my cheeks as I consider it. “Must’ve been over twenty years.”

Which makes it even more insane to think about her now after all this time. After a while, the thing that’s been niggling at the back of my mind once I remembered my long lost Scottish friend pops up front and center.

“You know I wrote to her several times, but all my letters came back. Eventually, I gave up, but it always bothered me.”

All this time, and I was still a little angry with her because I thought she had left me high and dry. It was only one summer, but after that fire, it felt like the four of us built this unbreakable bond, and when I didn’t hear back from her…

“It’s hard when something is left unresolved,” he mutters mostly to himself, making me wonder what’s bothering him.

I consider asking, but Caleb’s always been good about bringing up his own problems if he wants to talk about it. So, I leave it be, and when the waitress returns, we both order our usual. French toast and extra crispy bacon for him, and a florentine omelet and rye toast for me.

Chapter Thirteen

? Sakura ?

Me: I don’t think this is a good idea.

It’s the night before Estrella’s kink party, and I have the coldest feet, they’re practically blue.

Caleb: Buttercup, you’re going to that party even if I have to come over and hog tie you and carry you over my back like a sack of potatoes.

I laugh.

Me: What happened to safe, sane, and consensual?
