For thirty-three years, I managed to stay free, to not get trapped or tied down. But look how the mighty have fallen. If my twenty-five year old self could see me now, she wouldn’t believe it. She’d tell me I was crazy, and I am. Crazy in love with a girl I never saw coming, not in a million years.

Would I change a thing?

Not on your life!

So what if all I can think about is her… twenty-four-seven.

So what if she’s my first thought when I wake up and the last one before I fall asleep.

So what if I snap at any Tom, Dick, or Harry that comes within twenty feet of her.

So, I’m possessive… sue me.

Everyone at work ribs me relentlessly saying I’m pussy whipped. You know what I say to that? Damn straight. I no longer have a thing to hide. I’m on top of the world as I tell everyone I see how much I love Sakura Takahashi. How perfect she is for me and that one day I’m gonna make her mine with a collar around her neck and a ring on her finger.

“Girl, you know I’ve been shipping you two before you were even a thing, but don’t you think you’re moving a hair too fast?”

That’s Caleb trying to be the good angel on my shoulder as I drag him to the nicest jewelry store in Austin.

I stop right outside. “Caleb, I’ve never been as sure about anything as I am about her.”

Then, I give the tiniest bit. “Plus, who said I had to use the ring right away? I just want it for when I decide to officially ask.”

He narrows his pretty blue eyes. “Yeah, you say that now, but I know you better than anyone. You have more self control than the pope himself, but once you put your mind to something it’s full steam ahead.”

I roll my eyes. “Why are you so worried about this?”

He leans close and nudges me playfully. “I just don’t want you to scare her away.”

I snort. “For your sake or mine?”

It hasn’t been lost on me that my closest friend and the woman who holds my heart are as close as they can be.

“Yours, of course. But I love her, too, ya know. Next to you, she’s my favorite bestie.”

I shake my head exasperated, but can’t hide my ear to ear grin. “You’re ridiculous.”

“Yeah, but that’s why you love me.” He pulls the jewelry store door open and tips his hat. “After you, my lady.”

Now it’s my turn to snort. “Oh my gawd! Stahp!”

We’re both a giggling mess as we stumble into the store that’s obviously too fancy for the likes of us. You can tell by the clerks wrapped in pristine dark suits, without a single hair out of place.

But fuck em!

Nothing but the best for my little hummingbird.

A young woman with jet black hair approaches with her nose high in the air. “May I help you?”

Yes, and you can start by losing the attitude. “I’m looking for an engagement ring.”

She’s fighting real hard not to roll her eyes. “And do you have a price point?”

You can tell she’s already low balled me, but fuck her. The only person I need to impress is Sakura.

I shrug. “I can swing just about anything.”

By the tart look on her face, she believes that’s highly unlikely. “Allow me to show you a wide range of men’s rings.”
