He nods shyly. “I love it.”

“And will you wear it for me?”

“With honor.”

I handle the collar with care as I wrap it around his throat. It fits perfectly.

“My God, you’re a sight.”

He preens as he fingers it reverently. “I love you so much.”

“As I love you.”

Chapter Thirty Five

? Sakura ?

“Rise and shine, Sakura!”

I sit straight up in bed wildly rubbing away the sleep in my eyes to take in my mother laying clothes on my bed. Clothes I’ve never seen before and wouldn’t be caught dead wearing.

“What’s that?” I mumble.

She seems to hear me loud and clear, giving me the stink eye. I’m not sure if it’s due to my question or the lack of effort I put into asking it. No doubt both, considering I’ve been on her shit list… well, I suppose since the day I was born.

She holds up a pink tweed suit that reminds me of Cher from Clueless. “This is what you’ll be wearing when we make the rounds today.”

Fuck me!

The woman has had me running wedding errands nonstop for the past week. What else can there possibly be?

“I want you out of that bed and in the shower in the next five minutes. Make sure you straighten your hair, and for God’s sake, slap some makeup on your ashen cheeks. You’re supposed to be a blushing bride, not a zombie.”

As quickly as she appeared my mother waltzes from the room knowing I’ll do every thing she says to the T. I’m almost tempted to roll over and fall back asleep, but I’ve had about as much of her animosity as I can take.

???

As my mother pulls in front of the bridal dress shop, I’m trying real hard not to roll my eyes or sigh. Having spent a nightmare of an afternoon here with her and my future mother-in-law as I try on dozens of horrendous marshmallow dresses has left an awful taste in my mouth.

As we walk in, my dread grows as we come face to face with Mrs. Sato. She’s about as two-faced as my own mother, so I can see right through that fake little smile as she judges me.

In my head, I’m screaming, ‘if I’m not good enough for your son then call off this damn charade of a wedding!’

“How lovely to see you Mai, and aren’t you looking darling, Sakura?” She winks at my mother. “I just know this is all your influence.”

And what the fuck is that supposed to mean? It’s not like I haven’t always been my mother’s puppet.

The two women are too busy chattering among themselves to pay attention to my stewing. So, I’m the first to notice the boutique owner who’s all smiles as she approaches.

I’ve never seen so much ass kissing in my life, but I manage to grin and bear it as she leads me to the dressing room chattering the entire way. “…you’re just going to look divine… such a pretty girl… your groom is a very lucky man…”

I’m thankful when she leaves me alone in the tiny dressing room with my wedding gown hanging up for my evaluation.

My God, this just makes it that much more real. I’m getting married. It feels like I’m on a speeding locomotive, but the track ends on the edge of a cliff, and the breaks are broken. I’ve suddenly broken out in a cold sweat and my stomach is roiling. I’m grateful I skipped breakfast.

When the owner appears with a glass of champagne, I snatch it from her hand and down it in one go.

“Now, honey, that's not the kind of wine you guzzle, it’s meant to be savored…”
