Chapter Eighteen

Moira

––––––––

THE CHURNING IN MYstomach gets worse and worse the closer it gets to the meeting with Jareth. The only thing that helps the slightest bit is seeing how excited Lexie is to hang out for a couple hours with Aurora and her pack. Knowing she's safe and happy helps me focus on what's coming.

Hendrix and Ryder stay quiet as they walk with me towards the park, leaving me to my anxious thoughts.

I've barely been able to eat all day, no matter how much they hovered and fussed, but I promised they could feed me after this is over.

The walk to the park is over too soon and there he is, sitting at the same bench we used the other night.

Ryder squeezes my hand. “We're here with you. If you want to leave at any point, we'll make it happen."

They slow their steps, giving me privacy for this reunion, silent support in the background.

Jareth is just as gorgeous as I remember, his light blonde hair a little darker, his blue eyes still icy, his body no longer lanky, but now filled out in lean muscles that better fit his tall form.

He’s a painfully beautiful omega who still makes my knees weak and my heart pound.

Jareth rises as I approach, his expression unreadable. "Thanks for coming."

A huge part of me wants to throw myself at him, to hold him close, but I hold myself back, wanting answers first. “I’m a little confused at the secret meeting, but I hope you're going to actually explain what the fuck is going on."

He nods. ”That's why we're here."

I swallow hard, nerves erupting in my belly. “Go ahead then."

He winces. “I fucked up."

I narrow my gaze on him. “What?"

Jareth sinks back into his seat with a defeated air. “They're fucking feral. From what I can gather, after you broke up and left, they focused on searching for an omega, but they kept getting rejected, over and over again. It broke them. When I met them, they knew who I was and I fell for their bullshit about trying to reconnect with you and desire to be a pack. I'm sick of being on this stupid program, so I decided to use them right back. I agreed to a formal courtship as long as they'd find you. They were happy to, and at first things were fine. But then their cracks began to show and I realized what was going on."

My pulse pounds in my ears. "What exactly is that?"

His lips curl in disgust. ”Since I'm a male omega and can't birth children, and Nicole has no interest in it, they want you basically as their broodmare. Even if all you'll shoot out are betas. Their words."

Those fucking assholes.

I plop onto the bench across the table from him. “What about my daughter? What are their plans for her?"

He snarls, his blue eyes freezing with cold rage. “They've gotten very alpha about it, claiming her theirs. It's all a possessive thing, like she's an object or weapon for them to wield. I don't know, they're not really making sense. I'm so sorry. I should've just left things alone."

I rub at my face. “They may have still come for me anyway."

Feral alphas are dangerous and unpredictable. Their craving for a pack and bonds can push them over the edge if they don't practice control. And two alphas, egging each other on? It was bound to bring about disaster.

"Do you know how they found me? When they started looking?"

"Three months ago. Right after I met them. And I have proof. I've been collecting recordings and snapping photos of paperwork, gathering everything I can to help protect you. They think I'm some empty headed omega, falling for their bullshit, though they keep me on a tight leash." He rolls his eyes.

My brain is a mixture of relief and fury and terror and hope. I want to enjoy this reunion with Jareth, but everything he’s telling me makes that impossible. What the hell am I going to do with two feral alphas coming after me and Lexie?

"How did you get away tonight?" I ask.

"They're out to dinner."
