Chapter Twenty-Two

Moira

––––––––

IT ISN'T TWO HOURSlater when Jareth waltzes through the door with a big grin on his face. I don't have long before I need to go pick up Lexie, but I'm thrilled to see him alone.

I race over to him and throw myself into his arms, half tempted to drag him up to my apartment and fuck him silly, but we have more important things to deal with at the moment.

He breathes me in for a moment, kissing the side of my neck before letting me go and stepping back. "They sent me to talk you around."

I snort. “I figured that would be their next step."

He flashes a grin. “It's what I was hoping for too. You played it beautifully at lunch."

I cringe. “Did I? Were they pissed? They didn't take it out on you, did they?"

I’ve been worried I pushed too hard and Jareth would be the one to pay for it.

He waves off my concern. “Just some nasty words. They've never touched me."

My brow furrows. “You shouldn't have to hear cruelty either."

"What they think and say doesn't bother me at all. They're just a means to an end. You."

Everything he says to me makes me swoon, it's utterly ridiculous.

I head over to my table of ceramics and grab a couple mugs, holding them up for Jareth to choose between. “Enzo is reaching out to the private investigator for a statement and putting together all of the information you got us and he'll be ready to respond to any custody shit soon."

Jareth points to the mug with the dragon curling around the handle. ”Good. I look forward to getting the hell away from them and finally having time with you."

"Me too. It took everything I had not to end things completely with them today. But it shouldn't be long and then we can both be free."

I set the dragon mug on one of my tables and gesture for him to have a seat.

Jareth sits with a sigh. “It sure took long enough to get here."

"That it did." I grab my cart of glazes and wheel them over to him.

He digs through the basket of paintbrushes. “They're pissed and surprised you're resisting so much, especially Nicole, but Brad got her calmed down."

I scoff. “She always was a spoiled brat. I can't even remember what I saw in either one of them."

It makes me cringe, knowing I fell for their shit and stayed for years.

"They can be incredibly charming when they try, but it wears off pretty quickly now." Jareth picks a few glazes from the cart, choosing a green the same color as Ryder’s eyes and a stormy gray the same color as mine.

I wonder if it’s purposeful or unconscious.

"I just really don't understand why they're so intent on this."

It makes no sense to me. Even now, they’re making sure to remind me I’m just a beta. And from what Jareth has said, they didn’t argue with him when he demanded they find me if they wanted him to bond with them.

He shakes the green glaze. “They're feral. It makes them obsessive and possessive over what they perceive as theirs. I think meeting me triggered it and brought things with you back. Something in their brains just flipped and they were suddenly determined to have all of us."
