Now that he’s back in my life, I’m reluctant to be apart from him. Especially knowing he’s putting himself at risk for me.

Jareth shrugs. ”I don't know. I'll report back that you seem a little more receptive and are no longer completely against the idea."

"Tell them the issue is mostly uprooting Lexie again. I'm curious to know how far they're willing to offer to bend for the daughter they claim to have always wanted."

They sure as hell haven't shown much care about her so far.

Hendrix sits down at the table with us. ”I spoke with Enzo earlier and he thinks everything could be ready as early as tomorrow. He knows you don't want to drag this out for too long."

My stomach flutters because things are moving so fast.

I turn not Jareth. “We need to set up a meeting with the Omega Council to dissolve your courtship with them first so that's handled before I give them the bad news."

"Enzo can help with that too,” Hendrix says. “Dealing with that bullshit Council is his specialty."

I cringe. “Are you sure we're not giving him too much work? I'm never going to be able to repay him for all his help."

I hate the feeling of owing someone.

Hendrix shakes his head. “He doesn’t want or need anything in exchange for this. It's literally what he does. The OFF keeps him on their payroll to do it."

I frown. “But I'm not an omega."

Hendrix reaches across the table to squeeze my clenched hands. “He helps betas all the time too. Don't stress, he'd tell you if he couldn't do it. Just accept the help."

I've been trying to do just that more, but it's not so simple to rewire whole parts of yourself. It's hard to change years of toxic independence and to trust people. Especially when you haven't known them very long.

Jareth smirks at Hendrix. ”I’ll accept it on her behalf. I'd be grateful for a lawyer to meet with the OC with us so they are less likely to pull anything."

Hendrix nods and smirks back. “I’ll tell Enzo to set up the meeting and we'll send you the time and place."

Jareth rises from his seat. “Thank you. I better go. I know you need to go pick up Lexie soon."

I rise as well, pressing myself into his arms. “Try to sneak away again if you can. I hate sending you back to them."

He wraps me up tight, scent-marking me. “It won't be long now before I'm completely your problem. But don't worry, I fully plan to get a job and pull my own weight."

I pull back enough to glare up at him. “That's the last thing I'm worried about at the moment. You've never had a chance to live life on your own terms and find something you're passionate about."

He brushes a curl out of my face. “Thank you for not assuring me you'll take care of me and I don’t need to worry about working."

"You always wanted to work, to have something. I assume that hasn't changed."

He kisses my forehead. “It hasn't. But in the meantime, I can help you out with your studio."

I chuckle as he releases me. “You were always excellent in art class."

And his dragon mug is going to be gorgeous once I fire it in the kiln.

"You can be open a little more often with my help."

"Sounds perfect. I love the idea of working together." I want as much time with him as I can get after having so much of it stolen.

"There are always openings at the rec center too if you want to try something like that. Do you like sports?" Hendrix asks.

"I used to enjoy soccer a lot before my designation came in and they wouldn't let me play anymore."

Interest lights up in Hendrix’s eyes. “We definitely need help with soccer. My coworker hates it, so he's always leaving me to handle it alone. And I’m not a big fan either.”
