"It's fun. Especially if you take me to get ice cream." She shoots me a sly look from the corner of her eye.

The little con artist.

I'm reluctantly impressed and utterly charmed.

“We can maybe do that next time, but I don't want to worry your mother."

She nods easily, not arguing or whining. “I wish you and Coach Hendrix still lived with us. I liked it."

"I liked it too."

I didn’t want to leave either, especially in the middle of all this other mess with the alphas.

"You should move back in."

"It's a little small for so many of us." I’d rather they moved in with me.

I have plenty of room that’s wasted on just me.

"I guess we should move somewhere bigger. Don't you own a bunch of buildings?" Lexie asks.

She’s apparently on the same page as me. Now we just need to get her mother on that page.

"I do, but I don't have any empty homes at the moment."

Except my own.

The first shipment of books for the downstairs library is due to arrive tomorrow. I don't want to invite them over until I have it all set up.

Lexie sighs. “I guess we'll just have to squeeze."

I chuckle at her determination to get us back to the house, her own longing for a pack and family clear. From birth, all the books and movies and everything else tells us a pack is the ultimate goal in life. That without one, we're a failure.

I see it a lot in the kids at school who weren't born into packs. They feel like they're missing something that their peers enjoy. What they are too young to realize is that those of us who come from packless families typically remain closer to them than those who come from packs. But even once you grow enough to understand that, the need and desire are too much a part of us, and it's still something we all chase.

Even when we know better.

Even when we know it's going to hurt.

But for the first time, I'm no longer afraid. I know exactly who I want my pack to be and I know I’m safe with them. And I'm determined to take care of them in return.

We reach the studio and Lexie runs ahead, pulling away from me. I'm curious to see how she reacts to Jareth. She's been so welcoming to us, so excited we're in her life. Will she be the same with him?

He smells fucking delicious, his scent of sea and grass a perfect compliment to Moira's lavender and pepper.

I'm excited to see him again too. Especially if they've been spending the day like I expect they have, now coated in each other's scents.

I hurry to catch up with Lexie, right on her heels when she pushes inside. I almost trip over her when she stops suddenly on the threshold.

"Who are you?"
