“But you understand why I didn’t.”

His chest heaved. “I’m trying to.”

For a vampire, that was a huge concession. But then, most vampires in his position would’ve left me to rot in that cell.

I hugged him. “Thank you.”

“Never again, though.” He brought a hand to my face, angling my chin so he could look into my eyes. “Understand? This is your one chance. Don’t blow it.”

I gripped his wrist, willing him to feel my sincerity. “I understand, and I won’t blow it.”

“Good.” He gave me a hard kiss, then returned his attention to undressing me. My shorts and panties joined my other clothes in a heap on the floor.

He nuzzled my mound. One long finger dipped into my sex, testing my wetness. He gave a hum of satisfaction and closed his lips around my clit, sucking lightly.

My knees turned to rubber. I grabbed his head to keep my balance, and he let me go with a last, tantalizing lick.

He smacked my ass and stood up. “Get in the tub.”

I dragged a hand over my hair to steady myself. “I have to pee first. And brush my teeth—my mouth tastes like a mouse crawled inside and died.”

He chuckled. “You have such a colorful way of putting things.”

“That’s why you like me.”

His smile faded. “I do like you. Too much.”

My breath snagged in my chest. “Same here.”

We stared at each other for a good ten seconds, then he pointed to a cupboard. “Toothbrushes are in there.”

He sauntered to the jacuzzi—and yeah, he sauntered, knowing I was watching—and down the steps into the steaming water. Turning off the faucet, he leaned back and rested his arms along the rim of the tub. Water droplets slid down his neck and over his smooth, powerful shoulders. Other drops clung to the light brown hair on his chest.

I licked my lips.

He lifted a brow, amused. “I thought you had to pee?”

“Right.” I lurched into motion.

The toilet was in a small, enclosed stall off the main bathroom. I used it and washed up, then brushed my teeth and slipped into the jacuzzi.

I tried to crawl on top of Brien, but he turned me around and pulled me between his outstretched legs. My eyes drifted shut and I relaxed against him.

His fingers trailed up my thigh. “The water’s hot enough?”

I nodded. “Yeah. It feels so good.”

Dark strands of my hair floated around our shoulders. He undid what was left of my braid, combing it with his fingers.

“I should wash it,” I said without moving.

“Let me wash you first.” Picking up a bar of soap, he lathered up his hands and stroked his soapy fingers over my breasts. The clean scent of lemons spiced the air. His fingers moved to my stomach, then my arms. Massaging, caressing. “Should I turn on the jets?”

I shook my head. “I like it quiet like this.”

It was so hushed, I heard the low slap of the water against the bathtub when he changed positions, drawing his knees in so they supported my bent legs.

“How about some music?” he asked.
