Excitement danced over my nerve endings. I pressed my inner thighs together. “What’s that?”

“Get a room, you two,” growled Rafe.

“Let’s dance,” Zoe suggested and dragged him away. That’s when I realized the other two couples had already moved off.

Brien didn’t even look to see if they’d left, just bit me hard enough to draw blood, then licked it. Arousal rocketed through me.

“This.” He palmed my ass, pulling me up against his erection.

Laughter fizzed up in me. Reaching behind me, I set my champagne glass on a table. “That’s the plan? Sex?”

“Hot sex.” Withdrawing his fangs, he kissed his way up my neck. “Hot, hard sex.” He traced the shell of my ear with his tongue. “Whenever I want it. However I want it. In case you forget who the real alpha is.”

My whole body heated. “That works,” I managed to say.

He smiled, slow and so wicked I’m surprised I didn’t spontaneously self-combust. “I thought it might.”

Scooping me into his arms, he strode with me back to the castle. But when we reached the lower level, instead of heading for his apartment, he turned in the opposite direction.

“Where are you taking me?” I nibbled on his earlobe, not really caring as long as it was private.

“I had the primus’s apartment renovated for us. If I don’t take it over, people will wonder why, but I wanted to bring you somewhere new. Somewhere decorated just for us.”

“But I liked your old apartment.”

“Good, because I had them move the furniture.” Opening the door with one hand, he carried me over the threshold and set me down.

“Oh!” I brought my hand to my mouth. “I love it.”

It was like his apartment, but larger—an open plan with the same plank floors and sage couches and chairs. The walls were a robin’s egg blue that reminded me of the sky over the island, and the wet bar was carved with a big sun and crescent moon.

He shrugged, but I could tell he was pleased. “My parents had a lot of musty French antiques. I figured that wouldn’t be your style.”

“No. And you moved the paintings.”

“I remembered how much you liked them.”

I gave him a quick, happy kiss. “I love it,” I said again. “The color you painted the walls, the wet bar.”

I started for the bedroom, but he caught my hand and drew me toward a room off the living room. “I have something else for you. Your mate gift.”

“My mate gift?” I looked around, puzzled.

“I’ve had people working on it around the clock. You go first.”

He gave me a small push over the threshold. A soft pink light glowed on and gradually increased in intensity. Other lights joined it until the room was washed in warm pinks and lavenders and oranges.

“It’s a sunrise,” I breathed.

The rest of the room was an indoor garden of leafy green plants and cozy couches and chairs. There was even a reading nook supplied with plump pillows and a stack of books.

Brien was looking at me. “If I could give you the sun, I would. But I can’t, so…”

“Oh, Brien.” Tears filled my eyes. I gave him a hard hug. “You couldn’t have given me a better gift. I love you so much.”

He buried his face in my hair. “I love you, too. You’re my light, my heart. Without you, nothing seems to matter. If you left me now, I wouldn’t survive.”

Emotion welled up in me. He sounded so humble, so…human.
