“Why not? Who would I tell?”

“I’m not worried about that. You’re not going to have access to any communication devices.”

“Then why not tell me?”

Setting my wine on the table, I reached for her hair. She seemed calmer now, but I sensed the fear beneath the sass. A better man would try to ease her fears.

But I wasn’t feeling nice. Not tonight.

“Your hair grows fast.” I wrapped the silky dark tresses around my palm, turn by turn, forcing her to scoot closer to me on the couch until our hips were touching.

“Stop it.” She put a hand on my chest. “I know you’re going to let me go.”

“Am I?”

I tightened my grip on her hair, half-expecting her to try and shove me away. Maybe I would’ve let her and maybe I wouldn’t. Like I said, I wasn’t feeling particularly nice.

But she didn’t try to push me away. Instead, she slid her hand up, stroking a thumb over my collarbone, although stopping short of my throat. She knew not to touch a vampire’s throat without permission.

I tugged on her hair, drawing her head back so her long, pretty neck was exposed to my hungry gaze. Her muscles worked, and my fangs tingled.

After all, holding off—beingnice—had gotten me nothing.

That night in Montreal, she’d held me so tight, like I meant something to her. Said things—I want you, so much;I’ll see you tomorrow;yes, I promise I’ll be there—and then vanished like the earth had opened up and swallowed her whole.

Nice wasn’t my natural inclination. I was, after all, vampire-born.

A predator.

A rare pureblood born to two vampire parents. Raised on blood, not milk. Tutored with blows and harsh words, not kindness. Taught to take, not ask.

And I was starving. For her.

Only for her.

My fangs lengthened. I scraped the sharp points over her creamy beige skin. A single drop of blood welled. I licked it, taking her flavor into my mouth, savoring my first taste of her.

She was…perfect. Sexy, spicy, feminine.

Twilight shuddered. Her hand gripped my shoulder.

And she still hadn’t tried to push me away.

I licked my way to her ear and nibbled the lobe. “You want the truth?”

“Yes.” A single, breathy word. She gulped and spoke again, more firmly. “Yes.”

I retracted my fangs. Iwouldfeed from her. My vampire wouldn’t let her go now.

But not tonight. She needed to recuperate, gain some weight. I might be hungry, but I wasn’t a monster. And even if she were in good health, something was funny about this whole setup. I didn’t need Cain and Talon to point that out.

“You’re mine now.” I gave her hair a slight tug. “I own you, love. All you need to know is you’ll be with me. You’ll go wherever I say, do what I tell you to do. Or weren’t you paying attention when I bought you for four mil?”

She sucked in a shocked breath and drew back as far as she could with my hand in her hair. A small part of me was ashamed, but the rest felt an unholy satisfaction, wanted to hurt her just a little for leaving me like that.

Then her mouth pulled into a twisted smile. “Of course, sir.”

She grabbed the wrist of the hand I had twined in her hair and lowered herself to her knees in front of the couch. Startled, I went along with it.
